Scoop: pavers friendly platform tile

Susteren station is undergoing a phased renovation. Part of the large-scale update involves completely new paving on both platforms. It will be the first station in the Netherlands to be fully tiled with a new, paver-friendly platform tile. The first phase has now been completed. Time to look back with manager Arjan Beens of main contractor Knipscheer Rail-Infra.

Susteren station is undergoing a thorough transformation. Knipscheer is replacing the benches, trash cans, waiting booths, and information boards. The public address system, station clocks, and lighting on the platform and forecourt are also being renewed. However, the most radical job is the renovation of both side platforms. Beens: “The retaining walls, stairways, and paving are all being replaced. The platform is also being widened and the ramps are being modified. The renovation of both side platforms is being carried out in two phases and two 48-hour closures. Phase 1 was successfully completed over the weekend of April 6 and 7.”

The new tile is made from recycled concrete and is much lighter than a normal tile.

45,000 kilograms less weight

During the 48-hour shutdown, Knipscheer had only one track at its disposal. “Three weeks prior to the shutdown, we set up the work site and carried out preparatory activities, including soil remediation on the platform, as far as possible,” explains Beens. “Because we only had one track available – the other was being used by ProRail for other work – the logistics plan had to be accurate down to the minute. In a period of 48 hours, we installed new retaining walls over a length of 200 meters and renewed the entire paving. For the first time in the Netherlands, a new, paver-friendly platform tile was used. This tile is made from recycled concrete and is much lighter than a normal tile. Thanks to this tile, our pavers have to lift 45,000 kilograms less weight throughout the station.”

During the closure, Knipscheer Rail-Infra worked day and night with around fifty employees to carry out the work. “Surprised passengers couldn't believe that so much work had been done in a single weekend,” says Beens. “We too are pleased with the results of phase one. Later this year, in week 47, the other platform will also be renovated.
