Volvo's electric trucks have driven more than 80 million kilometers - or 2,000 times around the world - since the introduction of Volvo's first electric truck models in 2019. The electric trucks have reduced CO2 emissions while significantly improving the working environment for drivers and the environment in which they drive.
Since 2019, Volvo electric trucks have already driven more than 80 million kilometers in commercial freight worldwide, new data shows. When traveling the same distance with equivalent diesel-powered trucks, more than 25 million liters would be1 diesel were consumed and CO2 emissions through the exhaust were reduced by 68,000 tons2 reduced.
"I am excited to see transportation companies embrace electric trucks in their daily operations and see the benefits. The transportation sector represents 7% of global CO2 emissions and electric trucks are an important means of reducing the climate footprint. Thanks to the many companies that switched to electric trucks early, we are already seeing the huge potential of this technology," said Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks.
Volvo Trucks' early entry into the electric truck segment has resulted in unique expertise and experience in the field of zero emission electric transport. This knowledge will be used in the continued development of Volvo's next-generation electric offerings:
Global deliveries of Volvo's electric trucks increased by 256% to 1,977 trucks in 2023 and customer interest continues into 2024. In Europe, more than half of electric truck customers chose a Volvo in the first quarter of this year - Volvo's share of the electric segment was 56%. In the United States, Volvo represented 44% of all electric trucks sold.
Volvo has so far delivered more than 3,500 electric trucks to customers in 45 countries on six continents. A milestone was the delivery of the first heavy-duty electric trucks to Latin America in 2023, with vehicles to customers in Brazil, Chile and Uruguay. Volvo also became the first truck manufacturer to deliver battery-electric heavy trucks in Morocco, South Korea and Malaysia.
"Not only transportation companies, but also buyers of transportation and logistics services are joining SBTi (Science Based Target initiative) and beginning to demand sustainable transportation solutions from their suppliers. This is another driver for the shift to electric trucks," said Roger Alm.
Volvo's electric trucks meet needs in a wide range of applications - from urban distribution and waste management to regional transportation and construction. In the five years of electrification, Volvo has also developed strong expertise in optimizing the energy consumption, charging and maintenance of electric trucks.
Since 2019, Volvo Trucks' electric offering has gradually expanded to the current range that includes eight all-electric trucks.
The electric truck models offered by Volvo are: the Volvo FL Electric, FE Electric, FM Electric, FM Low Entry, FMX Electric, FH Electric, FH Aero Electric and the VNR Electric. The best-selling is the Volvo FH Electric, which was recently named International Truck of the Year 2024.
