Seminar with inspiring speakers and current topics on hinterland protection, port accessibility, nature compensation and energy

The fascination over the construction and design of a multi-purpose island and dam for the mouth of the Western Scheldt is the driving force behind this seminar and the follow-up to the earlier seminar held WORLD WATER WORKS at Antwerp Expo.

The official opening will be performed by Ms. Andrea Vollebrecht, director of the Association of Hydraulic Engineers, and Jo Annes de Bat, deputy commissioner of the King. Current topics will be presented by representative speakers such as Ir. Thijs de Boer RHDHV, TU-Delft prof.dr.ir. Stefan Aarninkhof and ir. Bram Bliek SVASEK prod.dr. Laura Molinari of VUB Brussels, mr.dr.drs. Peter Kruit international lawyer, prof.dr. ir. Pieter van Gelder TU-Delft.

Leading up to the start of this unique conference, there will be an addition with several more speakers and topics during this unique cross-border conference chaired by Prof. drs.ir. Han Vrijling. Be informed via the website www.bouweninwater.com Or sign up for the newsletter!

 The topics:

  • The realization of a second North-South connection Rotterdam-Calais that can serve as a dam to protect hinterland. A second shore connection will eventually be necessary when the Westerschelde tunnel becomes toll-free.
  • In addition to this bank connection, the idea is to create an island for the establishment of industry with, on the sea side, the coveted Westerschelde Container Terminal for storage and transshipment of the larger ships to inland shipping and road transport. This is to increase nautical safety on the Westerschelde and reduce road traffic congestion.
  • The dam can be equipped with a double lock complex for the free passage of coastal shipping and smaller ships to the various Westerschelde ports and hinterland.
  • The island provides space for industries and the establishment of one or more small modern nuclear power plants or alternative energy sources.
  • With this transition comes additional opportunities for living, working and recreation.
  • Also, "Building with and for Nature" alternatives to the Western Scheldt are widely discussed.
