Mobile tower cranes are gaining ground in the infrastructure sector

AWS Zwanenburg Project – Implementation by AWTG

Montarent has long been a specialist in the rental and sale of mobile quick-assembly tower cranes and vacuum machines. In the infrastructure sector, too, the mobile tower crane is increasingly proving its added value. For example, VOBI Infra made good use of the Montalift during the construction of the AWTG structures for the AWS Zwanenburg project. Thanks to its four-wheel drive and four-wheel steering, the Montalift is exceptionally well-suited for use on rough terrain.

The partnership with VOBI Infra goes back many years and originated from practical experience on the construction site, says Cor Koopmans, director of Montarent. “During a project, one of their competitors was using our quick-assembly tower crane, which immediately piqued their interest. The benefits are significant. Not only can you work more efficiently, but you’re also less dependent on third parties and able to submit more competitive bids. Since then, they’ve consistently rented mobile tower cranes from us for their projects, and since last year, they’ve even purchased two for long-term projects—two virtually new units from our rental fleet.”

Unique undercarriage

Montarent builds sixteen new mobile tower cranes each year in collaboration with global player Potain and has already built 215 of them. An interesting detail: the first crane, built in 1996, is still in operation. “We build the crane on a undercarriage we developed ourselves, featuring four-wheel drive and four-wheel steering. The major advantage of this configuration is that the crane can be driven while fully assembled, and because we can limit the lifting load to 10 metric tons per meter, it can be operated without a lifting certification. That makes our tower crane ideally suited for the type of work carried out by a company like VOBI Infra,” explains Koopmans. “During the construction of the AWTG’s, that flexibility really came to the fore, and the crane was used for all kinds of tasks, such as moving formwork, rebar, props, and building materials. Thanks to radio-controlled operation, a single person can independently pick up and move loads, which significantly increases labor productivity.”

Maximum reliability

Montarent’s rental fleet consists of 29 units that can be deployed at a wide variety of locations and are continuously updated to ensure maximum reliability, Koopmans assures us. Service is therefore a top priority. “We operate cranes 24/7. After every rental period, each crane undergoes a comprehensive inspection covering dozens of points to ensure reliability. In most cases, malfunctions are resolved remotely; otherwise, they are fixed on-site within a short time. This minimizes downtime and enhances the continuity of the construction process. Prior to a rental period, we always provide A and B recommendations to ensure the right crane is matched to the right project. For rentals of three days or more, we’re almost always cheaper than a crane company, but we’ll also come for just one day if the situation calls for it.”
