Climate change is creating more and more extremes. Heavy rainfall and dry periods alternate and become more frequent. This phenomenon increasingly causes damage to materials, but certainly also to urban greenery. Therefore, a thoughtful approach for the future is needed.
In the past, rainwater in the Netherlands was mostly drained as quickly as possible. Both in the countryside and in the inner city. Here it often went straight to the sewer. Fortunately, with an eye to climate adaptation, the drainage chain is increasingly being looked at differently. Public space is very suitable for disconnection. In this way, overloading the sewer system is efficiently prevented and rainwater can be used effectively. Because by collecting, purifying and retaining rainwater, it can be used excellently for watering urban greenery. This is already being successfully applied in more and more places.
ACO has developed the Intelligent Sustainable Urban Drainage System (I-DSAS). This protects inner-city areas from excessive rainwater, relieves the sewer system during heavy precipitation and reduces heat stress. As far as we are concerned, urban greenery plays a leading role in this, since desiccation of greenery in urban areas is as big an issue as relieving the sewage system. But yes, you have to know how to do this.
ACO is the knowledge and discussion partner for construction teams when it comes to climate adaptive solutions for the inner city. For example, together with the municipality of Zwolle, we developed, among other things, this smart filtration gutter for the station area. This collects rainwater high on the surface, filters it, retains it and then releases it to the surrounding planting beds. This keeps the traffic surfaces dry and the greenery green without detours!
