Sustainable and cost-effective
In the early spring of 2023, Voets Gewapende Grondconstructies joined the Boskalis tender team to jointly come up with an integral and feasible design for the road widening of the A2 motorway. It quickly became clear that this project is ideally suited for the design and realization of structures on reinforced soil foundations. Apart from its sustainable character, this approach offers significant advantages in terms of construction speed and cost efficiency.
In addition to a technical design, the overall solution also has several phasing challenges, begins Gino Jongmans, business manager at Voets Reinforced Ground Constructions. “To bridge height between new construction and the current highway, various phasing walls in reinforced soil are also being devised.”

The scope of Voets Gewapende Grondconstructies includes a total of five structures in the A2, five structures across the A2 and eight earth retaining structures parallel to the A2 for the purpose of the widening, lists Constant Brok, design leader and geotechnical specialist at Voets Gewapende Grondconstructies. During the project, the scope was expanded to include four additional fauna passages. “In a kind of mini-construction team, the best foundation solution for the abutments was investigated. Again, reinforced soil was the most logical choice, matching the foundations of the other structures,” says Jongmans.

From the image quality plan, a high level of finishing is required, especially for the application of gabions. “Within Voets, we have developed unique couplings to connect both gabions and concrete panels to the reinforced soil,” Brok explains.
Together with the main contractor, it was decided to design all reinforced soil objects in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the base material instead of polyester. Jongmans: “This eliminates stringent requirements regarding PH values of the backfill material and offers further advantages in design and execution for both subcontractor and main contractor.”

In execution, Jongmans says this project requires a lot of flexibility from the organization. “The work was started in phases and takes place under varying conditions, sometimes at night and on weekends. With two production teams and a compact design team, planning and progress are constantly being anticipated in order to turn out the intended volumes. And this is done in a very pleasant cooperation with the people of Boskalis.’
