'Work equipment identification guide renewed'

'Work equipment identification guide updated'

BMWT has now given this guide a restyling, not only on the outside but also on the inside with the most up-to-date information.

Inside the guide you will find an overview of the terminology and technical knowledge to conduct an (identity) investigation in case of theft or loss of work equipment.

Millions of dollars worth of work equipment is stolen every year. This equipment includes excavators, rollers, tractors, telehandlers and dumpers. This guide excludes hand tools.

Registration requirement

From January 1, 2021, it will be possible to register all existing limited-speed motor vehicles online with the RDW. New machines will be immediately provided with a license plate upon delivery. By providing work equipment with a license plate, theft will be made considerably more difficult and tracking easier. There are exceptions to the registration requirement. Motor vehicles that do not drive on public roads or have a maximum construction speed of less than 6 km/h do not fall under the registration obligation.

Effective June 21, an applicant must add a photo of the type plate/Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) when registering a limited speed motor vehicle (MMBS) or equipment towed by these vehicles. In addition to the VIN, other data are required, including the vehicle's make, trade name and type. Without the necessary vehicle data, registration is not possible. This identification guide helps users in tracing the location of type plates on the machine.

Unique identity reduces risk of fraud

The mandatory VIN gives the vehicle a unique identity. The VIN is also known as the "fingerprint" of the vehicle. This significantly reduces the chances of vehicle fraud.

Purpose of the identification guide

With this guide, we aim to provide information on the issues surrounding theft of work equipment. We have provided insight into what to look for and the technical knowledge needed to conduct (identity) investigations. The guide also includes an overview of the terminology related to work equipment, in order to increase awareness within the enforcement services such as police, Environmental and Transport Inspectorate and Inspectorate SZW.
