New Construction Talk campaign should ensure safer construction sites

To this day, the construction site or project site is one of the most unsafe workplaces in the Netherlands. Unfortunately, an accident is in a small corner. But how do we prevent these accidents? How do we ensure fewer accidents in this workplace? This is what Bouwspraak was created for in 2019. To get these simple hand and arm gestures between the ears, a new campaign starts on May 10.

What is Construction Talk again?

Many accidents are preventable through better communication. Clear and unambiguous communication is a challenge when you consider that workers are often affected by environmental noise. In addition, Dutch has long since ceased to be the only language on the construction site or project site. And the construction process is becoming increasingly complex. More and more specialists are working on the same site at the same time. Bouwspraak is a universal "language" to increase safety in the construction and infrastructure sector. Through simple and recognizable hand and arm gestures, everyone on the construction site or project location can communicate with each other.

May 10 launch new campaign

To make sure that Construction Talk really gets between the ears of everyone who is on a construction site or project site, a new campaign starts on May 10. The focus will be on twelve short comical videos à la Snipers. A handy tool to master hand and arm gestures will follow in September. The videos focus on construction worker Leo Alkemade. The videos show how Leo does his best to learn Construction Speech, with varying degrees of success and sometimes major consequences. Although the videos are intentionally made for laughs, to get and hold attention, safety on the construction site or project site is of course a serious matter. You can watch the first video here:

Eight languages

That Construction Talk is serious business is reflected in the elaboration of the various arm and hand gestures. These are made to warn, direct and/or protect colleagues. Intended to quickly and easily alert each other to unsafe situations. Examples include gestures for: Help, Stop, Backward/forward or hearing protection. Retrieved from www.bouwspraak.nl hand and arm gestures are available in the languages Bulgarian, German, English, Hungarian, Dutch, Polish, Romanian and Turkish.

With Construction talk you protect each other

Speech confusion and noise on the line due to a noisy environment appear to play a crucial role in unsafe situations. That is why the sector parties have joined forces and developed Bouwspraak to create more safety on construction sites and project locations. Bouwspraak must become part of everyone's workmanship.
