Antea Group goes for ambitious climate action

This initiative represents the most far-reaching CO₂ emission reduction goals. This makes Antea Group part of a global group of leading companies that choose ambitious climate action.

Science-Based Targets are a way of making climate ambitions and actions comparable between different organizations. The Science-Based Targets are an initiative of the United Nations, the World Resources Institute (WRI), CDP and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and are intended to ensure a drastic reduction of greenhouse gases in order to slow down global warming.

Highest level of ambition

Affiliated organizations can choose a climate pathway appropriate for limiting warming to 1.5 ̊C or 2.0 ̊C. Antea Group chooses the highest level of ambition: emission reductions appropriate for warming of 1.5 ̊C. "That half a degree seems a small difference, but it is not," says Marijke Frielink, change manager sustainability. "Half a degree less warming produces a big difference in impacts: less sea level rise and flooding, up to two times less frequent extreme heat and more than half less loss of biodiversity."

Urgency

With this step, Antea Group wants to make a concrete contribution to the agreements laid down in the Paris climate agreement and follow the most up-to-date climate science. The climate ambition fits into the 1001-day plan: the program through which Antea Group will invest in innovation, sustainability and being a good employer in the coming years. CEO Tanja Lendzion: "From dyke reinforcement to the design of flood plains: our engineers are involved in dozens of projects every year to keep the Netherlands dry feet. We experience the urgency of preventing global warming every day. That is why we take the lead when it comes to emission reduction."

Far-reaching CO-reduction

Antea Group is already certified for the highest rung of the CO₂ performance ladder. However, its commitment to the SBTs calls for even more ambitious measures. Lendzion: "For example, we are going to make our lease car fleet 100% electric and we want to drastically reduce our travel footprint. In addition, the SBTs require us to continue to challenge our employees to make our operations more sustainable. An additional advantage is that we can also properly advise and support our customers in this."

The signing of the application has taken place. It is expected that the SBTi will validate actual targets in early 2021.
