Customization in hydraulic engineering

For specialized work in structural hydraulic engineering, standard equipment is often not enough. This also applies to Beens Groep, which was looking for a new crane for its projects that could combine several disciplines in one configuration. The choice fell on a Hitachi ZX490-7, but one that was fully customized, with re-use of existing components and a clear focus on deployability, lifting capacity and safety.

The reason for the project was the replacement of a Hitachi ZX470-3. That machine had proven itself for years, but no longer met Beens' requirements for modern hydraulic engineering work. Among other things, the new crane had to be able to install sheet piles up to 12 meters, handle a heavy anchor drill and be quickly deployable on changing projects.

From the first discussions, it was clear that it would not be a standard replacement, but a further development. Not everything had to be new; what was technically still good had to be retained. This approach led to a customized project in which existing and new technology came together.

New boom, familiar base

An important part of the configuration is the boom solution. For this, the company cooperated with KTEG, which introduced a new 2-piece boom for the ZX490 at bauma. This boom is constructed from standard Hitachi components and is controlled via an additional original valve block.

Combined with heavy lift cylinders, this provides a lifting capacity of over 30 tons at 4 meters from the center of the machine. Nagel Hydraulics added nine additional hydraulic functions, making both vibratory block, anchor drill and regular attachments completely controllable from the cab.

Reuse of the undercarriage

Notable is the reuse of the hydraulic extendable undercarriage of the old ZX470-3. This was technically still in excellent condition and proved perfectly suited for a second life under the new ZX490-7. During the construction period, the undercarriage was overhauled, components were renewed and a new slewing ring and center joint were mounted.

In turn, the old ZX470-3 received a young used standard undercarriage from a ZX490. This preserved valuable equipment and avoided unnecessary replacement.

For the jib, hoist winch and integration of the powerpack, the company collaborated with Beco. The new frame combines the PVE powerpack with integrated ballast of over 5 tons. The powerpack is closer to the machine than before, improving stability and accessibility.

The system was technically modified, repainted and linked to the machine's 270-degree camera system. A retractable staircase was mounted under the frame for safe and quick access during maintenance and conversion.

Safety and inspection

For Beens, safety is not an afterthought. The machine is therefore equipped with all required safety systems in accordance with EN13000 and EN16228, provided by Nijhuis. The full inspection was carried out by HHC. In this configuration, the total weight of the machine is over 60 tons.

After the technical delivery, the ZX490-7 was sprayed in Beens' distinctive house style by Van Brummelen. With this, the crane is not only functionally matched to the job, but also immediately visually recognizable on the project site.

The end result is a crane that combines multiple functions and can quickly switch between jobs. Through smart choices in configuration, reuse and engineering, the ZX490-7 fits seamlessly with Beens' daily practice in hydraulic engineering.
