12,000 m² of asphalt ‘ripped up’ in record time’
The Vlaketunnel in Zeeland was completely closed to traffic for ten days in April due to major maintenance. Among other things, a new layer of asphalt was laid during that period. To that end, Jennissen removed the asphalt from both tunnel tubes in record time. No fewer than seven rippers were deployed simultaneously, for which SAES International was called upon.
Commissioned by Gebr. Van Kessel, Jennissen was responsible for removing the asphalt in the Vlaketunnel down to the concrete. This involved a layer of asphalt 8 centimeters thick, covering a total area of approximately 12,000 m2. To tackle this massive job, heavy equipment was deployed: no fewer than seven cranes with rippers, supported by a shovel and an additional crane at the depot. The removed asphalt slabs were hauled away immediately.

Initially, Jennissen had three rippers at its disposal, but that proved insufficient for the scale of this project. That’s why they turned to SAES. In a short time, SAES built five rippers, fully tailored to Jennissen’s specifications. “That allowed us to rip with seven cranes simultaneously, which significantly increased productivity,” says project manager Pieter Pels. The results were impressive: in two 16-hour shifts, 6,000 m² of asphalt was removed each time. “We started with the first tunnel tube on Thursday, after which the contractor was able to repave this tunnel tube as early as Saturday,” explains Pels. “The second tunnel tube, in the direction from Zeeland to Brabant, was tackled on Monday. Here, too, the job was completed within sixteen hours, so that two days later, the new layer of asphalt could be laid in this tube as well.”

The partnership with SAES once again proved to be of great value. The company had previously supplied two rippers and various other pieces of equipment, and this time, too, they responded quickly. “They offer excellent service,” says Pels, who also praises SAES’s flexibility and responsiveness, as well as its ability to quickly address specific customer needs. In addition to purchasing equipment—all five rippers were bought by Jennissen—the company also regularly uses SAES’s rental service. “We recently rented a demolition hammer for a project in Maasbree,” says Pels. “It was delivered right to the project site in perfect condition, complete with fine-tuning by a technician on-site. We got the most out of it, because the hammer performed optimally throughout the entire project.”
Jennissen’s work in the Vlaketunnel was part of a larger ten-day operation that, in addition to asphalt paving, included repairs to the expansion joints and the replacement of guardrails. Looking ahead, Pels expects this type of large-scale project to become more common. “The investment in the five rippers is a strategic decision,” he says. “The successful completion of the work in the Vlaketunnel demonstrates what is possible with the right preparation and the right people and partners around us.”
