Deployment of solar masts with CO2-neutral fuel cells
Securing a project site involves much more than just installing a few cameras. Especially at a sprawling site, such as the Neder-Betuwe Dike Reinforcement project, that simply won’t cut it. The Neder-Betuwe Dike Alliance therefore deliberately chose BauWatch, a project partner that handles the entire process: from site inspections and security consulting to deployment, monitoring, and coordination. Notably, the project utilizes innovative solar masts equipped with a unique CO2-neutral fuel cell.
Camera security at project sites is increasingly becoming a strict requirement from insurers to prevent theft and vandalism. “That’s why we received a request for camera security from Dijkalliantie Neder-Betuwe,” says Stefan Liebrecht, key account manager at BauWatch. Rather than simply preparing a quote in response to that request, we first took the time to thoroughly familiarize ourselves with the project and the specific challenges at the site. “We then developed a comprehensive security plan, tailored to the client’s needs.”
BauWatch inspected and mapped out all locations in advance: what needs to be secured, what risks exist, and which solution is appropriate? “Based on that, we determine what type of camera poles are needed and how many cameras are required per pole,” explains Thirza Posthouwer, a security consultant at BauWatch. “Sometimes a single camera is sufficient, while in other places multiple camera angles are needed to optimally capture machinery, materials, containers, or gates, for example.” Liebrecht notes that certain BauWatch masts also feature a time-lapse function. “That’s less important for this project, but it can be useful during the construction of, say, a bridge or other structure.”

In total, BauWatch has currently installed fourteen camera masts at the dike reinforcement project, spread across five locations. “We opted for a combination of masts powered by a fixed power supply—such as at the construction camp—as well as sustainable solar solutions. “Our solar poles are installed at locations without a power supply,” Thirza explains. “They are equipped with three solar panels and a carbon-neutral methanol fuel cell. The fuel cell, in particular, makes our poles truly unique and eliminates the need for a generator.”
All camera masts communicate with the BauWatch control center in Apeldoorn. “This is where all reports come in, and we immediately contact surveillance services or the police when necessary,” says Thirza. “At the same time, the dike alliance maintains maximum control in this case through our app. They can view the feed live or adjust monitoring schedules. This prevents false alarms when, for example, staff work longer hours on-site.”
Almost anyone can install a camera, but according to Liebrecht, good service and follow-up are just as important. “That’s where we really make a difference. We actively contribute ideas about security and risks, and remain closely involved throughout the project. Regular site visits, reports, and consultation meetings ensure that security measures continuously adapt to the sometimes rapidly changing reality on the ground. We operate as a full-fledged project partner.”
