The widening of the A2 between the Het Vonderen and Kerensheide interchanges affects Dirix Elsloo on all sides. The project is literally taking place on their doorstep. Their own recycling site in Stein is also strategically located. Within the project, the family business is therefore responsible for a variety of activities, including earth moving, the supply of various building materials, the removal and intake of raw materials and transport.
Like many other subcontractors, Dirix Elsloo was invited at an early stage by main contractor Boskalis to participate in this extensive project. “We had previously worked together on other projects, such as Bridge Wessem just last year. We are taking that experience with us on a project that has a major impact on the region,” says director Tim Dirix. “We are on the job almost continuously, and scale up considerably with additional manpower and equipment when the work demands it.”
For Dirix, one of the highlights to date was the Weekend Break last November. “The fact that the A2 was completely closed and no traffic was moving was absolutely impressive. We don't experience that very often. After all, we overlook the A2 from our office. For us, the weekend itself was mainly a matter of tight organization and follow-through, but we are used to that from other weekend and night closures.”

An important part of Dirix's contribution is its own recycling site in Stein, just two minutes from the A2 motorway. “At this 4.5-hectare site, we process construction rubble from the region into certified mixing and concrete granulate, which is used on the A2,” Dirix explains. “We also have a certified soil bank and have our own quarry for sand extraction, among other things. So we offer a total package for road construction: from supplies of construction and raw materials to earth moving and paving.”
A family business since 1923, Dirix has been active in the same industry and now has 150 employees. “We are proud to contribute to this project, but the best is yet to come. Later, when the new lanes become visible and traffic flow improves, we will experience firsthand the tangible results of this wonderful project.”
