Van Dijk Maasland has developed into a multidisciplinary contractor operating in infra, construction, environmental and green space. “But the core is in foundations,” says director Frans van Dijk. “We are still doing what we started in the 1970s: coming up with innovative solutions for building and living on soft soil.”

The family business began as a contracting company in 1953 and has grown to become a specialist in subsidence and foundation repair. “We have been pioneers with lightweight materials. In the 1970s we introduced EPS, and later foam concrete. And in recent years we have put foam glass on the map in the Netherlands. In doing so, we were the first to apply the material within the requirements of the Soil Quality Decree.”
Those innovations are much needed in a country where the soil continues to sink. “We do traditional work, of course: raising neighborhoods, redesigning streets. But our real specialization is subsidence and foundation repair. You can see that now in projects in Boskoop and Schiedam, but also in contracts with housing corporations in Rotterdam. There we are renovating the foundations of homes with techniques we have developed ourselves, such as the VDM auger pile. This allows us to work behind the baseboard without residents having to remove everything from their homes.”
Van Dijk Maasland is known for its craftsmanship, Van Dijk knows. “We do a lot ourselves, with our own people. That's important, because our work comes with precision. If you are excavating a house that is still just standing on rotted wooden piles, you have to know exactly what you are doing, with support frames and the right piles. It's work you can't just outsource.”

The company is familiar with many contract forms, including construction teams. “Clients explicitly ask us to think with them. In Boskoop, for example, where you have to deal with heavy subsidence and foundation problems. Then it's not just about raising, but about reducing loads: sand out, light material in. That's what we advise on. EPS, foam concrete, foam glass - each project requires its own mix.”
They are also closely involved in the Knowledge Center for Subsidence and Foundations in Gouda. “There we bring knowledge and practice together. We've been at it since the 1970s and I don't know of any other company that has been combining both specializations - subsidence and foundation repair - for so long.”
One of the most talked-about innovations is the EZ-flow, developed in collaboration with partners in the Kade 2.020 program in Amsterdam. “The task in Amsterdam is huge: 200 kilometers of quay wall must be renewed. We came up with a method that allows half of the existing quay to remain standing. We place an L-element against it, which preserves trees and limits the inconvenience. Residents are very happy with this. Meanwhile, our method is the preferred variant in dozens of water sections.”

Despite these large projects, Van Dijk Maasland remains down-to-earth. The company works with permanent teams, short lines of communication and a management team that is closely involved in execution. “The most important thing is that we unburden our clients and deliver sustainable solutions. That's what made us big, and it will continue to do so for decades to come.”
