The connecting link in soil flows
JdB Group is able to effectively excavate soils separately so that each part gets its proper use.

The connecting link in soil flows

Ever since its founding in 1946, JdB Group has been all about one thing: dealing smartly with raw materials. What began as a trading company in sand and soil has grown into a versatile contractor with over 150 employees, a head office in Hoofddorp and branches in Nieuwveen, Soest and Kudelstaart. Through the unique combination of trade, execution and logistics, the family business has developed into the party that knows how to connect soil flows between projects efficiently, sustainably and with maximum value for the chain.

Smart linking of projects

According to managing director Roeland den Breejen, the strength of JdB Group lies in seeing opportunities. “Where many projects release soil that is actually needed elsewhere, we provide the connection. We don't look at one project in isolation, but at the total soil flows in a region.” Thanks to an intricate network of depots, transfer locations and partners throughout the Netherlands, JdB group knows how to cleverly match supply and demand. “This creates a circular system in which soil, sand and clay do not go to waste, but keep gaining value in the next project.”

What makes JdB unique is that the company controls the entire chain: from source and processing to transportation.

From A9 to peak storage

That connecting link is evident in numerous projects. “For the widening of the A9 between Badhoevedorp and Holendrecht, to date we have supplied over 1.8 million m3 of sand for contractor FCC, no less than 80 percent of which is circular from other projects,” says Jan Grisnich, business manager realization at JdB. “Also at the peak storage facility in the Haarlemmermeer, a water storage facility that can hold up to 1 million m3 of water, JdB Group provided coordination of all soil flows, in cooperation with KWS Infra. “Wherever soil is released, we find a new application. That is our strength,” Den Breejen emphasizes.

With its own cranes, operators and drivers, JdB can not only move soil streams, but also separate, purify, optimally apply and even upgrade them into high-quality soil products.

Logistics and knowledge in one hand

What makes JdB unique is that the company controls the entire chain: from source and processing to transportation. With its own cranes, operators and drivers, the company can not only move soil streams, but also separate them, purify them, apply them optimally and even upgrade them to high-quality soil products. That requires both skill and experience. “By knowing well what is in the soil, we preserve the value of the material,” Grisnich says. “We are able to effectively excavate soils separately, so that each part gets its proper destination.”

Dune landscape on water barrier

A striking example of this integrated approach is a project in Almere, where JdB collaborated on the construction of a dune landscape on a primary flood barrier. “Because the work area was in the middle of a residential neighborhood, we chose to deliver the raw materials by water,” Den Breejen explains. “That way hundreds of truck trips through the neighborhood were avoided. At the same time, we made all the tree soil on site. That saved time, transportation and emissions, and shows exactly where we make a difference as a company: connecting soil streams smartly, minimizing logistics and preserving maximum value.”

JdB Group's added value in smartly connecting and utilizing raw materials also came in handy during the construction of a new shipping channel. “We bid for a tender in which two implementation variants were possible: spread the released soil flows on site, or dispose of the entire volume of some 140,000 m3 and reuse it,” says Grisnich. “Whereas many parties opted for the simple solution of spreading, we deliberately chose the circular variant in which we were able to extract dyke clay and peat separately, among other things. We were the only ones who dared to take this route, and were able to do it more sharply ánd preserve the quality of the material.”

The need for smart resource links will only grow in the coming years, Den Breejen expects. “Particularly in the energy transition, there are still an awful lot of opportunities, which involve a lot of digging.” In this, JdB sees its role growing further as a connecting link between projects, parties and soil flows. “Our added value lies in seeing the whole. We think in chains, not in separate assignments. That's where we make a difference.”
