Working for a natural balance of flora and fauna

Where the water works in the IJsseldelta are completed, the green works follow. By sowing special grasses on the dikes and flower mixtures in the countryside, Aannemingsbedrijf Netjes Kampen is stimulating the natural balance of flora and fauna.

On the dikes, Netjes Kampen sows a special dike mixture. Within a few days, a grass species germinates from the seeds that performs well under a variety of conditions. "We are talking about sod-forming grasses," explains director/owner Jan Netjes. "These germinate quickly, root well and make the dike green and sturdy at the same time." On various flat surfaces, Netjes Kampen sows flower and bee mixtures.

Given the large areas - a total of 100 ha - Netjes Kampen built a special seeder for this work. With an extra arm on the tractor or crane, it can now also sow on the steep slopes without any problems. On the flat areas, it uses a tractor with a self-developed seeder behind it.

Since Netjes Kampen is also in charge of the management of the IJssel Delta, its responsibilities also include mowing, both on land and in the water. "Here it is important that the plants we have mowed below the water table are also immediately removed," Netjes explains. "That way you prevent growth from accelerating due to nutrient release. With our mowing collection boat, we can do this work smoothly and efficiently. We do take pride in owning this boat. There are only a few of these in the Netherlands."
