Social media and traffic don't mix. Yet some road users find it hard to resist incoming apps and updates. That is why the national campaign "Mono, undisturbed on the road" will be launched again on September 2. Don't be disturbed while driving, keep your attention on the road! The campaign is an initiative of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment, in cooperation with provinces, municipalities, police, various social organizations and other companies such as telecom providers and ICT companies.
Yet this behavior is common and, according to SWOV's estimate, leads to several dozen victims a year. Carla Brugman is deputy for traffic safety: "I think social media and participating in traffic is an irresponsible and life-threatening combination. Keep your eyes on the road and not on the screen! If you check your messages while driving or biking, even if only for a few seconds, you don't see what's going on around you and you have a high chance of having an accident. You put not only yourself but also other road users in danger."
As of July 1, 2019, the ban on holding a cell phone in traffic has been extended to all drivers of a vehicle, including cyclists. The new rules also expanded the term "cell phone" to "mobile electronic device" as of July 1. This means that holding other electronic devices such as tablets, music players and cameras is no longer allowed on bicycles either.
Everyone does it sometimes: reading emails, sending a message or checking the latest apps while driving or cycling. In this campaign, in addition to the motorist and cyclist, the social environment is addressed precisely in order to take away the social pressure and the "fear of missing out" among drivers. The goal is to make them aware of the distracting effect of smartphone use while driving and the risks that such behavior causes for their own safety and that of other road users. Being on the road is the best reason to do nothing with social media!
Responsible for this campaign in Limburg is the Regional Organ for Traffic Safety Limburg (ROVL). This is the independent administrative body that works on behalf of the Province of Limburg to improve traffic safety in Limburg. ROVL therefore strives for zero traffic casualties! The 'Mono, undisturbed on the road' campaign fits in perfectly with this philosophy. Accident prevention is a responsibility of all of us. Together we make zero a point!
