Surfing in the heart of Rotterdam gets closer: water in the tub!

Starting May 6, we are filling the construction pit of outdoor surfpool RiF010 in Rotterdam with water! As much as 4,500,000 liters of purified canal water will flow into the tub!

RiF010 an outdoor Surfpool in the heart of downtown Rotterdam

It all started in 2014 after RiF010 won the last Rotterdam city initiative. RiF010 is being built in the back of the Steigersgracht between the Market Hall and the Koopgoot. Due to the complexity of the project in the middle of the city center, it took a while to get underway. Mobilis has been involved in RiF010 as a consultant and builder from the initiation phase. Wavepool

The wavepool is 130 meters long and 21 meters wide and is realized in an existing canal. By installing concrete walls, a basin was created in the canal that separated the wave pool from the Steigersgracht itself. The basin runs from a deep side to a shallow side and eventually ends in a pebble beach. The deep side is located at the Grote Markt and from this side the waves are realized. From the wave installation, waves up to 1.5 meters are generated. The waves roll from this side toward the Weze Bridge where they become stranded on the pebble beach. By applying an artificial reef, the waves break. At the end of the wavepool, a lower wave is created that is accessible to beginners.

The beach house

In the bowl of the Steigersgracht on the side of the Vlasmarkt bridge, the wooden beach house is being built. The beach house consists of a basement, two floors and a covered terrace. It will be used for dressing room, catering and as a surf shop. The steel structure will be finished with a facade cladding of wood.

Installations

The basin has two installations; one to purify the water, one to produce the waves. This installation was conceived and made by the Hellebrekers company especially for this project and cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

The wave installation consists of 8 blowers that can produce a wave of 1.5 meters in height every 7 seconds on average. Each blower is located in its own so-called wave chamber. Soon waves can be produced with different presets or settings for each target group. A purification installation (drum filter) filters the water in the Steigersgracht.
