In the coming years, the Netherlands will face an enormous task of replacing and renovating its infrastructure. Hundreds of objects ‘with a plug,’ such as bridges, locks, and other movable structures, are in urgent need of renewal. Added to this is the shortage of technical professionals. “Coming to a standstill is not an option, so we have to work smarter to get this done,” says Arjan van Bommel, Director of Services at Pilz Netherlands.
According to him, the key lies in standardization and smart design solutions. “Keep it simple. Only by simplifying processes and systems and developing reusable standards can we tackle this challenge together.” Pilz supports the market with advice on CE marking and machine safety, combined with engineering, standardization, and innovative automation solutions that often run on its own PSS 4000 PLC.

In addition to safety, security is also playing an increasingly important role. In 2027, the new European Machinery Regulation will come into force, in which industrial security is explicitly enshrined. “Whereas in the past we mainly protected people from machines, now it's also about protecting machines from people,” explains Van Bommel. “This requires access controls, digital measures, and carefully designed processes that guarantee the continuity of critical installations.”
Pilz's focus is not only on bridges and locks, but also on railways. The rollout of ERTMS and rapid digitization within the railway sector make industrial security and functional safety indispensable here too. “The infrastructure landscape is changing rapidly, and this is an area where we can add significant value,” says Van Bommel.
The government is deliberately involving innovative parties in order to achieve this complex task together. Pilz has expressly chosen to play a prominent role in this. Particularly at a time when geopolitical tensions and digital threats are increasing, and bridges, locks, and railways are part of critical infrastructure, caution is required. “Safety and reliability can never be taken for granted. As an innovative partner, we consciously take our responsibility in this regard.”
