BUKO Infrasupport: digital services offered as part of temporary traffic measures

Roadworks. You can't avoid them. Or you can! BUKO Reachable,
part of BUKO Infrasupport, is introducing two fully automated services.
First up is the "Digital Announcement," where a fully automated social
media campaign informs residents and road users about road work.
And second, "Digital Closure," a tool that prevents navigation systems from traffic
send through closed areas.

"At BUKO Bereikbaar, we combine our expertise of temporary traffic situations with the digital world," said Fawad-Khan Bahadur, product manager at BUKO Bereikbaar. "The goal is minimal traffic disruption for road users and local residents and maximum safety for road workers. And we achieve this with hybrid traffic measures, combining physical traffic measures with digital solutions."

Any project, large or small

"We do that by merging data, behavior and digitization into an innovative 360º approach." Fawad-Khan explains that BUKO Bereikbaar initially supported mostly large projects. "Where previously a lot of customization was needed for traffic safety and a positive(er) nuisance experience, we are now making these digital services available for smaller projects as well. Every project, big or small, can benefit from increased safety and sustainability."

Digital innovation, effective communication

"Digital Announcement and Digital Closure are both innovative tools based on effective communication," Fawad-Khan said, explaining. "Digital announcement is a fully automated tool that uses social media to inform people who live, work or travel near work activities." This service is fully automated, facilitated by technology, where in fact no human intervention is involved. The platform ensures proper dissemination. "People who are informed in advance experience less inconvenience," according to Fawad-Khan. "Indeed, unexpected disruption is translated into expected disruption, where people have a choice: they can decide whether to leave earlier or work from home, travel differently by public transport or bicycle, or still get into the car with the knowledge that they will be delayed."

"Digital closure reduces traffic around the work area. When BUKO Infrasupport places physical measures, this tool automatically ensures that the most frequently used navigation systems indicate that there are works and an alternative route is offered. Rijkswaterstaat's Smart Mobility Monitor shows that most navigation users actually follow up on this pre-trip information. It also shows that many people have their navigation turned on even on routes they already know. That benefits us, but also the road users themselves. And the clients," adds Fawad-Khan. "No search traffic around the work area means more safety and less CO2 emissions."

BUKO Infrasupport is proud to be the first party where digital services are a standard part of traffic measures. "Local residents, road users and clients are going to benefit immensely from these services," Fawad-Khan says in conclusion.
