Solid ground underfoot thanks to geogrids

“The tender showed that reinforced soil is a good application within the A16 Rotterdam project. We approached De Groene Boog with the message that we wanted to take up the challenge. We turned out to have an attractive proposition and sat down early with the design teams.” Speaking is Gino Jongmans of Voets Gewapende Grondconstructies. Together with partner company HUESKER Synthetic, Voets has provided solid ground in Rotterdam. We speak to Jongmans together with Joris van den Berg of HUESKER.

About the collaboration

Huesker is known as a producer of high-quality materials that find their way into the world of infra. Huesker's fabrics and geogrids can be found in road surfaces and foundation structures, among other things. A team of engineers continuously thinks about new applications within all branches of the GWW. The solutions all have one thing in common: they are future-proof. Voets Gewapende Grondconstructies has evolved from the concrete world and has developed a specialization in reinforced soil structures. And there too: Voets builds future-proof. This is how the collaboration with Huesker came about; both companies complement each other nicely and share a vision of the future.

Early integral design

Jongmans says: “We don't build alone, but together with Huesker we tackle the designs integrally at an early stage. On the civil engineering side, this often results in nice savings. For De Groene Boog we started in subarea 3, the President Rooseveltweg, where a temporary construction road had to be built and mounds had to be raised for an auxiliary bridge. We were also called in at Terbregseplein, where a fly-over is being realized. The pre-construction site there was largely founded on pile mattress structures, using geogrids.” Added Van den Berg, “We combined system solutions. First, we build over the pile system a geogrids-reinforced mattress, which leads to a settlement-free structure, then we continue working with the reinforced soil structures as soil retaining walls.”

Steering for sustainabilityJongmans notes that sustainability is always being driven. “If we see that reinforced soil is not the best solution, we say so honestly. We work for almost all major contractors, who appreciate that enormously. We always look at what we can do with our production equipment, to match the client's requirements. Above all, we deliver a reliable end product in a dynamic environment. Together, we are able to optimize the solutions to a far-reaching degree, which requires materials with specific properties, so customization and certainly also durability. Our flexibility in combination with short lead times is characteristic of this. Very important to adequately deal with the dynamics surrounding planning. Our focus is therefore also on timely deliveries.”
