The transition from Slim to Antwerp to Slim on the Go is taking place in stages.
The Antwerp Transport Region is taking the next step in its mobility strategy. On September 23, the City of Antwerp and the Antwerp Transport Region Council agreed to scale up “Slim naar Antwerpen” to Smart on the Go, with the entire transportation region as the project area. In doing so, the region is opting for a single, recognizable mobility initiative that supports residents, commuters, students, visitors, and employers in their travel needs. This ambition was already enshrined in the Roadmap 2030, and the transition is taking place in stages: “Slim naar Antwerpen” will temporarily continue alongside Smart on the Go will continue to exist, after which the entire mobility operation will eventually continue under a single, recognizable name.
Since mobility does not stop at municipal and city boundaries, and in order to address regional and local mobility needs, the Regional Transportation Council is building on the expertise and reliability of “Slim naar Antwerpen.” It is doing so by scaling up the region and the program to Smart on the Go. Over the coming months, Lantis, the City of Antwerp, and the Department of Mobility and Public Works will work out the details of the rollout, with a planned launch in February 2027.
Slim was launched in Antwerp more than 10 years ago, in response to several major infrastructure projects in the Antwerp area, such as the Noorderlijn and the Oosterweel Link. To ensure accessibility to the city, the port, and the region during these projects, a program focused on behavioral change was developed under the direction of the City of Antwerp. After all, accessibility isn’t guaranteed solely by sufficient infrastructure, capacity, and a range of alternatives; users must also be encouraged to take advantage of those options. Over the past 10 years, “Slim naar Antwerpen” has successfully encouraged residents, visitors, employees, and employers in the urban context to make a modal shift.
Now the next step is being taken by scaling up the behavioral change program to the transportation region. This aligns with the goals set out in the Route Plan 2030, the regional mobility plan for the Antwerp Transportation Region. Its aim is to keep the region accessible, livable, and prosperous. In recent years, Flemish, federal, and local mobility partners have worked hard to provide users with choices aimed at facilitating a modal shift. Given the numerous construction projects in the region, it is essential that we continue to work together to expand these options and foster behavioral change.
Smart on the Go serves as the flagship for mobility initiatives throughout the region and brings together local govern, the Flemish government, and mobility partners. In doing so, Smart on the Go focuses heavily on behavioral change. Through targeted campaigns, inspiring mobility projects, and personalized guidance, residents, visitors, and employers will be encouraged to make conscious and smart travel choices.
The new name makes it clear that the service is no longer focused solely on the city of Antwerp, but on the entire transportation region. The transition will take place in stages. “Slim naar Antwerpen” will remain in place during an initial period and at the latest until 2028, alongside Smart on the Go exist. Ultimately, the entire mobility operation will be brought under the name Smart on the go.
This collaboration is already taking shape today in various projects across the region. For example, local governments are working together on shared mobility initiatives, including Donkey Republic’s bike-sharing program. The rollout of a new regional car-sharing system is also part of this joint approach.
