Funderingstechnieken Verstraeten B.V. (Fundex) specializes in (deep) foundations. This applies to high-rise buildings and industrial projects, but certainly also to the foundations under bridges and tunnels.
In a world where foundation techniques are becoming increasingly important, Fundex has played a leading role since 1953. This is partly due to the company’s innovative strength. The development of the Fundex and Tubex piles, which allow foundation piles to be installed vibration-free and by displacing soil, has permanently transformed the foundation industry.
In Drongen, Fundex Foundations, the Belgian branch of Fundex, laid the foundations for the new bridge over the E40. The bridge between Drongen and Baarle, which was over seventy years old, was replaced by a modern bridge with wide bike paths and a full-width sidewalk. A total of 59 foundation piles were installed on both sides of the bridge. Of these, 21 piles were installed vertically, and the remaining piles were installed at an angle (inclined position). This angled position was necessary to properly transfer the forces from the new bridge to the subsoil. The total of 118 foundation piles were installed using two F3500 pile-driving machines from Fundex.
Fundex is strongly committed to sustainability and operates a modern fleet. The heavy-duty F3500 and F4800 foundation machines are equipped with low-emission Stage V engines or, depending on the model, can be powered entirely by electricity. The fleet runs on HVO100 fuel. This reduces CO2 emissions by up to 90% compared to diesel. Where electrification is possible, that step is taken. For example, the previously diesel-powered grout injection pumps are being replaced by electric units. Every foundation machine is equipped with a data logging system.
This ensures that all relevant drilling parameters are recorded during the installation of each pile. The data is sent to the office, where it is analyzed and processed further.
The new CD20E and TTD50 can be operated in either fully electric or hybrid mode. These compact foundation machines are designed for construction sites that are difficult for larger machines to access. Examples include sensitive nature areas, inner-city projects, and sites where available space or working height is limited, but drilling must still reach great depths.
In Gothenburg, the electric CD20E was used for foundation work on a new tunnel. Within the limited space available, the machine installed piles with a diameter of 406 millimeters and a length of up to 53 meters. The electric drive helped significantly reduce emissions, noise, and disruption at the construction site.
The CD20E also proved its power in Vlissingen. The historic industrial halls of the former Koninklijke Maatschappij De Schelde shipyard will in the future house, among other things, a parking garage and an event hall. The Machinefabriek, built in 1913, is 16 meters high and 95 meters long. Using the CD20E, 160 foundation piles were installed vibration-free within the existing building, to a depth of over 25 meters. This allows the distinctive facade of this industrial monument to be preserved, while the building takes on a completely new function from the inside out. And in this way, Fundex is laying the foundation for a better world.
