Within the civil engineering sector, the TBS-SVA Group is best known as a specialist in drainage products. But in addition to climate-adaptive systems for stormwater management, the company also offers a wide range of products for underground energy infrastructure. “Due to grid upgrades and increasing pressure on the subsurface, there is a growing demand for high-capacity, low-maintenance, and flexibly expandable cable routes,” says Commercial Director Willy Bruckers. “This requires an integrated approach to design, accessibility, and management.”

Differentiation

According to Willy, this is particularly evident in industrial parks, logistics hubs, and other high-traffic environments, where the number of underground cable routes is increasing significantly and future expansions must remain possible. “This also places higher demands on the design of the subsurface infrastructure, in terms of load-bearing capacity, accessibility, and safety.”

Furthermore, not every situation calls for the same solution. “While main lanes and industrial zones are subject to heavy traffic loads, supporting lanes and side lanes often experience lighter loads. That’s why we assess each situation individually to determine which combination of materials, covers, and load classes is most suitable.”

Depending on the application, cable trenches can be equipped with various types of covers, tailored to the technical requirements, the desired level of accessibility, and the traffic load at a given location. For high-traffic infrastructure, TBS-SVA Group uses robust concrete cable trenches and covers. The covers range from concrete to aluminum and stainless steel to cast iron versions, while plastic solutions are also possible in lighter-traffic zones. “It is precisely this differentiation that makes a system future-proof and easy to maintain,” says Willy.

Cable Trays

SVA’s CONDUCT cable ducts, made of reinforced concrete, provide a durable and robust foundation for underground cable routes. They are designed to safely and neatly accommodate cables and conduits in locations such as high-voltage substations, industrial facilities, and connections between commercial buildings. By routing cables in bundles and protecting them, the infrastructure remains manageable, even as network density and complexity increase.

The system can be flexibly configured using custom-fit pieces for tailored solutions, mitered pieces and corner solutions for changes in direction, and T-connections for branch lines within the network. Features for grounding, leak water drainage, and openings for structural connections can also be integrated. “This allows us to fully tailor a cable route to the technical and civil engineering requirements of a project,” says Willy. “In addition, supplementary features, such as transformer pits and access systems, can be integrated directly into the design.”

Accessibility

According to Willy, underground energy infrastructure has long since ceased to be just about installation. “Maintenance, accessibility, and future expandability are becoming increasingly important. That’s why we don’t just supply cable trays, but complete systems, including surface-mounted and recessed access panels made of galvanized steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and cast iron.”

These hatches provide safe, reusable, and low-maintenance access to cable rooms, utility rooms, and substations. “This ensures that installations remain accessible for inspection, maintenance, and future modifications.”

According to Willy, it is precisely this accessibility that offers significant long-term benefits. “Technical modifications or network upgrades can be carried out without large-scale excavation or breaking up existing pavement,” he says. “That minimizes disruption, reduces material usage, and extends the lifespan of the entire infrastructure.”

In full

According to Willy, the strength lies primarily in combining cable trays, access hatches, and additional components into an integrated system. “We don’t supply individual parts; instead, we work with our customers to design the entire cable route,” he says, concluding: “It is precisely by coordinating all the components that we create a future-proof solution that meets the practical requirements of network expansion and maintenance.”
