The Many Facets of Steel

Commissioned by VOBI Infra, Galesloot Constructie supplied the steel structure for both of AWS Zwanenburg’s AWTG buildings. The project showcases the versatility of steel: from load-bearing structures and refined facade details to distinctive Corten steel.

The steel structures literally form the backbone of both buildings. Although the structures resemble each other, they are not identical. “From the very first phase, we fully modeled the steel structures in 3D BIM,” says Edward Galesloot of Galesloot Constructie. “This not only provided insight into the design but also ensured a seamless connection to the timber-frame elements that were constructed by third parties around our structure.”

CE Certification

All steelwork was manufactured in accordance with the NEN 1090 standard and supplied with CE certification, including qualified welding processes and prescribed surface treatments. “Because the steel in this project remains largely exposed, it required extra precision during both production and assembly. After all, galvanized steel is difficult to repair,” says Galesloot. The substructure for the wooden facade panels and the moving parts also required special attention. “By using box sections, we were able to ensure sufficient strength and prevent torsion in the door assemblies.” The substructure is finished with a durable duplex coating: hot-dip galvanized and finished with a two-layer powder coating. “This ensures a long service life and a high-quality appearance.”

Corten steel

Above the wooden facade panels is a playful roof structure made of Corten steel. “Corten steel is a material with which we have extensive experience. The specific alloy of copper, chromium, and nickel forms a protective patina layer that seals the underlying steel against moisture and oxygen. This makes the material particularly well-suited for sustainable applications in construction and infrastructure. We are therefore quite familiar with this material and manufacture many edge elements, fencing, stairs, and even complete bridge components from Corten steel.”

“Our strength lies in delivering customized solutions,” Galesloot summarizes. “Because we handle the entire process—from design to construction—in-house, we can respond quickly and ensure designs that are practical and feasible.” Galesloot Constructie works closely with VOBI Infra on the AWS Zwanenburg project. “Thanks to short lines of communication and regular consultations, we established an efficient process in which knowledge and resources—such as the use of the mobile tower crane—were shared back and forth. With this project, we underscore our expertise in steel in all its facets: from structural to aesthetic, from standard to specialized custom work.”
