'Natural solutions ensure strong dikes and biodiversity'

Rationale: Before the dike between Zwolle and Wijhe can be reinforced, researchers are going to do a lot of digging | Olst-Wijhe | AD.nl

In the Netherlands, dikes are crucial not only for our safety, but also for the preservation of biodiversity. Through smart, nature-oriented dike reinforcement, we can significantly improve biodiversity without compromising water safety. At a recent dike reinforcement between Zwolle and Wijhe, researchers carefully inspected the dike flora to determine the most suitable planting for after the reinforcement. This project shows that the choice of vegetation plays an important role.

Diversity in plantings strengthens levees

The core of nature-based dike reinforcement lies in the use of diverse, herb-rich grass mixtures. This vegetation roots deeper, which not only makes the dike sturdier, but also provides a home for a greater variety of insects and birds. This has already been proven in several pilot projects. In addition, customization for each dike is essential, as the optimal planting depends on factors such as soil conditions and environment. For example, some flowers thrive better in clay soil than in sand, and dike management in natural areas requires different techniques than along built-up areas.

Innovative mowing management

Mowing management is another important aspect of levee management. Traditionally, dikes are mowed twice a year, but innovation can make a difference here. Sinusoidal mowing, where parts of the vegetation remain, can further stimulate biodiversity, provided it is done safely. Research into the effects of different mowing methods on dike strength is therefore crucial.

Beaver-resistant mesh

We must also consider the impact of fauna such as beavers and muskrats, whose burrowing behavior can affect the stability of levees. Preventive measures, such as installing beaver-resistant netting, are necessary to keep our dikes safe. With Fugro's technologies, these digging behaviors can be mapped.

Win-win situation

Nature-oriented dike reinforcement offers a win-win situation. We increase biodiversity, strengthen our dikes and create a more beautiful landscape. By sharing knowledge and working together, we can apply this approach on a large scale. In this way we are ensuring a future with safe and nature-rich dikes that connect our country like green arteries.
