Proven low consumption

The tougher the job or terrain, the higher the savings. The new Volvo FH with I-Save combines the new D13TC engine with enhanced fuel-saving features that reduce fuel consumption by up to 7%, without sacrificing drivability.

Most Volvo Trucks dealers have a Volvo I-Save demo, which interested parties can test drive. Siegfried van Brabandt, Vehicle Sales Director at Volvo Trucks Belux: "We see a lot of interest from existing customers, but also from non-Volvo customers, to want to test drive the I-Save demo. We closely monitor the consumption of these trips via our transport information system Dynafleet. Among other things, we saw a trip up and down to the south of France with an average consumption of less than 25 liters. We also see very low consumption in activities such as cattle feed transport with PTO blowers that traditionally have high fuel consumption."

State-of-the-art fuel-efficient engine

At the heart of the Volvo FH with I-Save is the new, state-of-the-art D13TC, Volvo Trucks' most fuel-efficient long-haul engine ever. The engine has pistons with patented, corrugated internals that improve combustion and increase efficiency by directing heat and energy to the center of the cylinders. Excess energy in the exhaust gases is then used to power the engine through the Turbo Compound unit. This is an additional turbine placed in the exhaust stream.

The D13TC engine produces up to 300 Nm of extra torque, meaning less rpm and fuel is needed to maintain a steady speed in traffic. The results are even better when the route goes over slightly undulating terrain. And the heavier the work, the greater the savings will be.

No compromises on ride quality

"The Volvo FH with I-Save is our answer to the growing demand for fuel-efficient transport solutions. By combining different technologies, we manage to significantly reduce fuel consumption on long hauls. And this without compromising on driving characteristics. Thanks to the higher torque, we even notice that a higher average speed is achieved on heavy routes," explains Siegfried van Brabandt.

Other I-Save features include new fuel-efficient rear axles and an improved map-based I-See system that analyzes downhill gradients and adjusts driving and shifting behavior accordingly. The combined efficiency gains from all these options can result in fuel cost savings of up to 7% compared to Volvo Trucks' previous generation Euro 6 engines.

"The first rides have now been driven and we can see that there are a lot of gains to be made with I-Save. In any case, the first results are more than promising," concludes Siegfried van Brabandt proudly.
