Working on beautiful (infra) projects in Amstelveen

Amstelveen is bustling. The green city south of Amsterdam has been experiencing significant growth for many years. That's great, but it also means that developing and renewing the public outdoor space and facilitating construction and transformation projects requires constant attention. Because the municipality consciously chooses to tackle these large-scale interventions with its own people as much as possible, it is constantly looking for new and enthusiastic employees.

With over a thousand employees, the Municipality of Amstelveen is a sizeable organization. A quarter of them work in the Projects and Advice and Urban Development departments. Urban Development focuses primarily on facilitating construction projects in the municipality, while the (re)design of public outdoor space is the domain of the Projects and Advice department. "The nice thing about working at a municipality and specifically in Amstelveen under the smoke of Amsterdam and Schiphol Airport is the dynamics in both the projects and the environment," says Joni Mills, working as Team Leader Project Office. "From the past, there is also a lot of attention to green in the outdoor space. That makes it extra special." The many heemparks are a household name: regionally, nationally and even internationally.

Versatile

In fact, the Projects and Consulting departments form "small" project organizations within the larger whole. "We have all the expertise and knowledge in-house to complete a project from A to Z and make relatively little use of outside agencies. You don't see that very often within municipalities," Mills rightly says. Colleague Chris Fase can also confirm that, working within the municipality of Amstelveen as Team Leader of Policy and Advice on Outdoor Space. "The department Joni is responsible for can best be described as a project/engineering office, while the Policy and Advice team focuses more on the 'front end,' the policy tasks and commissioning. Among other things, we take care of the budgeting and integral programming of the projects that Joni takes on with her team. On the other hand, we inform and advise politicians on the progress of planned/ongoing projects. So for our department we are mainly looking for all-rounders who can not only supervise processes, but above all can also look beyond projects, be environmentally aware. While Joni is looking more for technical staff, such as project managers, work planners, landscape architects, traffic designers, supervisors, management supervisors, etc."

The municipality of Amstelveen stands for quality. The growth of the municipality and a large outflow of pensioners in the coming years reinforces the demand for new skilled workers. "We expect a certain responsibility and quality from our people, but within that there is plenty of room for (personal) development," says Fase. "In addition, it is nice that people know what is going on in the city among residents and entrepreneurs and are familiar with the sensitivities in order to provide quality and customization at that level as well. In return, the municipality provides an extremely dynamic working environment in modernized housing, designed as a green meeting park with even its own barista. And of course enough challenges to be able to make a difference within the municipal boundaries of Amstelveen as well as Aalsmeer."
