Delivering quality just above the waterline

In the G-Force project, the pipes installed behind the original quay wall will be connected at the top with a welded construction. For this specialized work, Lommers Welding Services from Purmerend has been engaged as the welding company.

Lommers Welding works with VCA and the NEN 1090, ISO 3834-2 and ISO 9001 standards, among others. "An important requirement for this project was that we work fully certified and perform our work according to the set standards," says Gerda Lommers.

The company was involved in the project at an early stage. "We helped think about the innovation that was expected from our client and the municipality of Amsterdam. Our materials and equipment are transported by electric transport to Amsterdam-North. From there, everything goes by boat to the location where the work takes place."

Unique execution

As a family business, Lommers Welding is a household name in the welding world. They carry out large-scale projects on location and in their own workshop, providing a total package from design to execution.

Gerda: "In the G-Force project, we fit the purlins around the installed piles. We weld a plate between the piles and a flange both front and back. This makes the construction much stiffer. It forms one whole after our work. Another anchor is then installed every few meters, which ensures that the overall framework is stabilized and the roadway stays in place."

G-Force's approach is different from standard. "The construction used here by integrating a beam with the pipes, we haven't done that before. The use of anchors with a 70-degree pitch is also project-specific."

Regarding the stiffening construction, Lommers Welding prefabricated as much as possible in order to spend less time on site. This in turn has a positive effect on the inconvenience to the surrounding area. The installation of the suspension of the so-called aprons, the prefabricated quay walls, was also taken care of by Lommers. All materials and applied method of welding are covered by CE standards.

Wet conditions

In general, water and welding do not mix. Lommers Welding works just above the waterline under wet conditions from a pontoon. Within the pilot project at the Singel, all welding work has now been completed according to execution class 2, in accordance with NEN-EN 1090.

Gerda: "It has become a wonderful project. I am really proud of what we achieved there together. We fully achieved the planning and quality. A big bonus is that both the municipality and the local residents are very satisfied. For our employees, the project presented an enjoyable challenge. We are happy that all involved are positive."
