The widening of the A2 between the Het Vonderen and Kerensheide interchanges to 2x3 lanes plus emergency lane was awarded to Boskalis by the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management in August 2023. In the call for tenders with a strong EMVI component, the vision on traffic disruption and attention to the livability of the surroundings during both the construction and usage phases proved decisive. In other words, smart phasing and maximum performance. This winning strategy was expressed on a large scale for the first time in 2025 during the WeekendBreek: a historic closing weekend of the A2 in Limburg, in which months of preparation came together in 56 hours of intensive work.

What do Stone Age hunters, badgers, the boxelder bat and the highway on the narrowest stretch of the Netherlands have in common? They all come together on the A2 between the junctions Het Vonderen and Kerensheide. On this 18-kilometer stretch, Rijkswaterstaat is working on structural widening. There will be an extra lane and a full-fledged emergency lane in both directions. The intervention is necessary to improve traffic flow, accessibility and road safety on one of the busiest highways in Limburg. Environmental manager Eric Eussen brings us up to date.

Safe implementation starts at the drawing board. It is not a paper exercise, but a way of working. That is exactly where things sometimes go wrong in practice. Safety has to be right up front: you have to be demonstrably ‘in control’ before the work starts. Fine words alone are not enough: what you say, you must also do. These are the words of Faisel Baboe, strategic safety coach at Baboe Consultancy BV. His son Cynric, manager of integral safety in the Boskalis team, works closely with Faisel to ensure safety during the widening of the A2 motorway in Limburg.
