Hollandia invests in the future

Hollandia designs, builds, and maintains complex steel structures (including engineering structures) and moving structures, such as bridges, locks, weirs, storm surge barriers, and special structures. “We are building in a more specialized and innovative way than ever before,” says Diederik van Rijn, director of Hollandia Infra. “In addition to craftsmanship and knowledge, this also requires strong partners to work with.
By combining forces and sharing knowledge, we take care of everything for our clients and handle the entire process: from design to turnkey delivery.”

Hollandia Infra and Hollandia Services are among the companies operating under the Hollandia banner. While Infra focuses on the construction of new steel structures, Services concentrates on asset management (major and regular maintenance), renovation, malfunctions, and emergencies. Together, they cover the entire life cycle of steel structures and moving parts, with all disciplines—from design and engineering to production, assembly, electrical engineering & installations (E&I), and mechanical engineering—being carried out in-house. Thanks to this unique combination of skilled employees and a strong market position in which cooperation, safety, and sustainability are of paramount importance, Hollandia is ready for the future. “We are unique in our market segment. We strive to play a leading and prominent role in our market. We do this by continuing to develop our processes and cooperation in the market with craftsmanship, passion, and a healthy dose of perseverance,” confirms Matthijs de Groot, managing director of Hollandia Services.

Investing in the V&R challenge

In the coming decades, the Netherlands will face an immense renewal and renovation task (V&R). Hundreds of steel structures—bridges, locks, and flood defenses—are reaching the end of their service life and need to be renewed or renovated. Hollandia is investing heavily to be well prepared for this. For example, it is expanding its production facilities so that it can build and assemble XL bridges entirely in-house. This will increase its capacity and flexibility for the challenging projects that lie ahead.

Building blocks for a future-proof Hollandia

In addition to this physical expansion, the company is focusing on five building blocks that form the basis for its future. “We invest in people by attracting and retaining skilled colleagues. Through our own company school, we train new talent and make optimal use of the knowledge of experienced employees.” In the market, the focus is on maintenance and renovation in the Netherlands, while replacement and new construction are mainly concentrated in Western Europe. “At the same time, we are modernizing our resources, such as facilities, equipment, and digital tools, and innovating our methods through digitization, automation, and process improvement. With all this, we want to be a leading employer that offers social added value and is anchored in the region,” says De Groot.

Strategic location and capacity

The production site in Krimpen aan den IJssel is located directly on open waterways near the ports of Rotterdam, making it ideal for transport and assembly. Here, Hollandia Infra and Hollandia Services combine their expertise to deliver large-scale performance.

“Steel structures and moving parts are becoming increasingly impressive, and conditions more challenging,” says Van Rijn. “This forces us to be creative and innovative in terms of design, engineering, project management, manufacturing, preservation, transport, and assembly.” In addition to its location in Krimpen, Hollandia Services also has a branch in Friesland, from where projects and emergencies in the north of the Netherlands are efficiently serviced. The proximity allows colleagues to be on site quickly in the event of malfunctions and emergencies, while the shorter travel distances help to reduce the ecological footprint.

Building reliable infrastructure together

Practical examples demonstrate its versatility. In 2024, Hollandia Infra completed projects including the Clyde Renfrew Bridge in Scotland, the Schiphol A9 bridges, and the innovative self-closing flood barrier at Steyl in Limburg. Recently, it joined forces with Rusthoven to start renovating the movable parts of the Papendrecht Bridge, commissioned by the Mobilis and Croonwolter&dros consortium.

Maintenance and renovation

Hollandia Services carries out maintenance and renovation projects on bridges, locks, storm surge barriers, and other structures. Examples include the Oosterschelde storm surge barrier and the Maeslant storm surge barrier, renovation of movable bridges in and around Delft, and multi-year maintenance of ninety movable bridges and locks in South Holland (together with Croonwolter&dros and Arcadis). In addition, it carries out the ROGO2 contract for the municipality of Amsterdam: the maintenance of a large number of movable bridges and locks.

People make the difference

“Technology and capacity are important, but ultimately relationships and people determine the success of our company. Working closely with clients, partners, and suppliers, we are in a strong position to tackle the upcoming V&R challenge,” say De Groot and Van Rijn.
