150 years of pride, innovation and social strength

Croonwolter&dros is celebrating a special milestone this year: 150 years of innovation, technology and social impact. What once began as two progressive companies - Croon Elektrotechniek and Wolter & Dros Werktuigbouw - merged into one powerful organization in 2017. Part of TBI for many years, the two companies decided to join forces with one clear goal: technology is becoming increasingly complex and integral, and together we can mean more. Today, Croonwolter&dros offers clients a complete, future-oriented technical portfolio - from design to maintenance.

But the merger meant more than just broader services. “We have evolved from value makers to value creators,” says Aris van Erkel, Division Director of Infra at Croonwolter&dros. “We not only deliver perfectly working systems and automation, but add social value to it. We think in terms of the entire life cycle of an object - from design and construction to maintenance and renovation. This is how we ensure the continuity of the Netherlands: from tunnels, locks and barriers to energy supplies and buildings.”

A broad portfolio

With almost 3,000 enthusiastic employees and annual sales of around €800 million, Croonwolter&dros operates in three sectors: utilities, infrastructure and industry. “In the infrastructure market, we have grown into a leading player,” says Eugène de Roodt, Statutory Director. “We are working on iconic projects such as the Corbulo tunnel, Eefde lock, the Westerschelde tunnel, the Sluiskil tunnel, Haringvliet and Papendrecht bridge and the Krammersluizen locks.”

Recently, the company also delivered a special project: the A16 Rotterdam, the new national highway between the A13 and A16 motorways. This is the first energy-neutral highway with a tunnel in the world! “There is a world of innovation in that,” says Van Erkel proudly. “With solar energy, batteries and smart direct current technology, we are helping to build a sustainable future.” The same technologies are now being used more widely, for example at the Krammersluizen locks, where a battery pack provides green power to the vehicle fleet and construction site.

Renovation, maintenance and smart renewal

Renovation and maintenance are an increasingly important part of the business. “Our maintenance portfolio is growing rapidly,” said Van Erkel. “We are developing smart concepts in which assets are designed in a modular and standardized way. This accelerates renovations and makes complex replacement tasks feasible within the strict Dutch regulations.”

A great example is the Maeslant barrier. “There we were involved in the construction, and now we also take care of the maintenance and operational operation during high water. That way we literally contribute to dry feet in the Netherlands.”

Secure, digital and sustainable

In addition to sustainability, security, both physical and digital, plays an increasingly important role. “We provide not only reliable technology, but also digital security,” De Roodt emphasizes. “CS2, our specialist label for OT cyber security, is growing rapidly, because vital infrastructure must be and remain protected against digital threats. That requires technology, but also awareness and behavior.”

In addition, Croonwolter&dros is investing heavily in the future: young talent, diversity and digital innovation. “We offer an inspiring and inclusive work environment in which young people can develop and contribute to solutions for basic necessities of life such as energy, water and mobility,” says De Roodt.

Together we create progress

In a world that is changing rapidly, cooperation is more important than ever. Croonwolter&dros therefore works intensively with partners, clients and suppliers to build the future faster, smarter and more sustainably. All under the powerful motto: ‘Together we create progress’.

The 150th anniversary will be celebrated with a series of inspiring activities, including a special anniversary truck and the World's Work Wagon traveling across the country. In it, the conversation will be about the themes that matter: energy transition, renovation and social impact.

“Our anniversary is not only a moment to look back,” De Roodt concludes, “but above all an invitation to shape the future together with pride, passion and skill.”
