K&A, turnkey supplier of sustainable bulkhead chain, is providing accommodation for Boskalis on the N69. No 'simple units', but a real modular office building, constructed from sustainable HSB elements with a surface area of no less than 1,524 m2.
"On an appealing project, a bulkhead shack belongs," believes Pieter Kroon of K&A. "The eye also wants something. Since the bulkhead skeleton is finished entirely in Boskalis' house color, it can be seen from a great distance that they are active on this work. In many cases, a bulkhead shack also proves to be a more economical alternative to standardized units, especially for long-term infrastructure projects. Moreover, modular housing can be reused many times. The same applies, by the way, to our cost-efficient, temporary Romney storage sheds."

A bulkhead shack consists of a foundation of industrial plates on which the HSB elements are modularly constructed, Kroon explains. "The interior walls can be placed project-dependently. So we are not dependent on a module size, as with a unit. That means we can make any layout we want with a free span of up to 12 meters. The walls, floors and roof are made of wood. This ensures pleasant comfort and a cozy atmosphere. Wood is also extremely durable and perfectly recyclable. In any case, bulkheads can be reused many times. That is also the case with this project." Boskalis has purchased this bulkhead shack from K&A for previous projects. Says Kroon, "Indeed, in addition to the production of new bulkhead chain, we also handle the movement from project to project or even any interim storage or buy-back."
The bulkhead shack on the N69 is composed of chain taken from several previous Boskalis projects. "We disassembled the chain and moved it to the N69 to build it up here in a new configuration," Kroon said. "We deliver the housing completely ready to use. Not just the shell, but all the installations down to even the furniture. In this case we are talking about a nice building of no less than 12 by 99 meters with an annex to it of another 12 by 28 meters. We also moved "our" Romney storage shed (11 by 15 meters) from another Boskalis job to the N69. The beauty of the modular nature of the bulkhead chain and sheds is that to move a building of over 1,500 m2 only ten freight movements are required. A huge savings in CO2-emissions and particulate matter relative to the use of units."
