Integrated BIM solution and precise verification in vertical construction

The need for high-rise buildings is increasing as the population increases and cities continue to grow. Topcon Positioning Group also notes this. Reason for Topcon to focus on tools and software that can support vertical construction when developing new products. Topcon presented several "vertical construction" solutions at INTERGEO 2019.

Speaking is Barry Engelen, Account Manager Geomatics at Topcon Positioning Netherlands: "For an optimal workflow in every phase of construction, it is important to accurately verify whether construction is taking place according to the BIM model. With Topcon's instruments, such as our GTL-1000, what has been built can not only be recorded, but can also be analyzed directly on site. It can help builders and contractors verify structures and digital building dimensions and gives great insight into construction progress."

3D scanner and Total Station in one

"The GTL-1000 is a combination of a 3D scanner and a Total Station. Because you can already make a precise comparison of your 3D model with reality within two hours, the workflow improves, adjustments can be made earlier in the work process and failure costs are reduced."

Engelen explains: "The device can be oriented in the local system, so the scans are automatically registered in the software. The data acquired with the GTL-1000 can be processed directly on site. The point cloud can be opened in ClearEdge3D Verity which is linked to Autodesk Navisworks. This allows the user to perform on-site quality control between the as-built situation and the design model."

Integration

"Integration is an important part of building using BIM. The cross-pollination of Topcon hardware with the right software ensures a smooth BIM process. We really focus on the total solution. With less data and storage, you can efficiently perform perfect verification." Engelen believes that large contractors in particular could work much more efficiently with this. He would like to take them through the whole process, with which you can present within a morning at the construction site what the deviations in construction are compared to the design model. How? Engelen walks us through it: "From setting up the instrument, orienting to fixed points and scanning a certain floor, for example, to then going to the construction site, where the data is processed in the laptop (fast because you're already in the right coordinate system) and the point cloud in the software can be compared to the design model. And, of course, the quick printout of the quality report after verification with just the push of a button. These reports are immediately available online to all members of the project team, so that in case of deviations, immediate action can be taken to reduce failure costs." Engelen concludes, "Not the product or the software, but rather the whole step-by-step plan is so convincing and fast, you just have to experience that to see the added value."
