Roof2Road asphalt mixture on dike between Tiel and Waardenburg

The dike between Tiel and Waardenburg no longer meets current safety requirements and must be reinforced. Construction combination Mekante Diek (Ploegam, Dura Vermeer, Van Oord) is carrying out the project on behalf of Waterschap Rivierenland. The aim is to reuse as many materials as possible. Therefore, among other things, a circular asphalt mixture from Roof2Road was chosen.

Client Water Board Rivierenland has specific sustainability goals. For example, since 2023 this project has been working with mainly electric equipment. Also, as much equipment as possible will be transported by water, as this saves on road transport. In addition, Water Board Rivierenland and construction combination Mekante Diek want to reuse as many materials as possible. Applying a circular asphalt mixture is an important part of this, including asphalt with Roof2Road. Gerben Bijker, director of Roof2Road: "The name gives it away a bit, Roof2Road is bituminous roofing material that is recycled and applied in the asphalt. Modern roofing material is very rich in bitumen and therefore very valuable to reuse. We also control the entire recycling process. This keeps the quality guaranteed from roof inspection to finished product."

Entire embankment made of circular asphalt

During the run-up to the project and its implementation, Mekante Diek held several discussions for the application of Dura Vermeer's circular asphalt. For the construction of the electric charging plaza (Watthub) for heavy equipment, asphalt with Roof2Road was used. For the charging plaza itself, Circular Pave from Dura Vermeer was used which is even 100% circular, so no new materials are added to it. Thanks to the good experiences at the loading plaza but also at numerous other projects in the Netherlands, it was decided to also apply asphalt with Roof2Road to the entire dike. A length of about 20 kilometers in total.

Certified

Sustainable asphalt produced with bitumen from Roof2Road is certified according to the CROW Asphalt Quality Handbook. Thanks to this certification, any user can make an informed choice for sustainable asphalt with circular bitumen. Gerben: "One can choose bitumen that is 50% circular or even replace all added bitumen sustainably. This while maintaining the same qualities. Raw materials such as oil and energy are more important than ever as strategic assets. Especially as we see these becoming increasingly scarce. An extra reason to use these key components in a circular way."
