Director of traffic on and around the A2

During the widening of the A2 motorway between the junctions Het Vonderen and Kerensheide, Visscher Traffic is responsible for all traffic measures, both on the freeway itself and on the underlying road network. From closures on main lanes and exits to the closure of small roads and bicycle lanes: everything that is needed to carry out the work safely and in a manageable way is arranged by Visscher Traffic.

From the very beginning we have been involved in the project, says Gerrit Jan van den Pol, branch manager region south at Visscher Traffic. “Initially supporting the traffic manager of Boskalis, later increasingly from a project leadership role. “We look at designs with a keen eye, participate in consultations and ensure that tasks are set out properly towards implementation. Approved drawings, traffic plans and agreements thus always end up in the right place within our organization.”

From drawing to execution

Attached to every traffic plan is a drawing, which is prepared by Visscher Traffic's designer. “These drawings show exactly where signs, fences, beacons and other facilities should be placed,” explains Eline Schuijers, project manager at Visscher Traffic. “Based on these plans, review and approval takes place in traffic consultations. If an exit or lane is to be closed, we also take care of the full implementation: from placing pre-announcement vehicles and red crosses above the road via a signal to the traffic center to detour signs and all conceivable barriers.”

Currently the work for Visscher Traffic consists mainly of smaller closures at on- and off-ramps, but they are already looking ahead to the next major weekend closure in October.

Milestone

Surely the first major milestone on the project for Visscher Traffic was the large-scale weekend closure in November 2025. “No less than 900 soil pots were hammered and several crews stood outside for days to prepare everything,” Van den Pol looks back. “More than a week prior to this closure, signs were placed and fences and beacons were prepared so that the weekend itself could run smoothly. Afterwards, everything was carefully removed again, although some of the equipment temporarily remained in use due to follow-up work.”

Alternative lighting

Currently the work for Visscher Traffic consists mainly of smaller, often nightly closures at slip roads and exits. At the same time we are already looking ahead to the next major weekend closure in October and there is room for innovation. “Together with Rijkswaterstaat we are working on a pilot for alternative temporary lane lighting on cones and beacons. It is much less labor-intensive and safer than the usual method of pushing temporary lighting columns into the ground. We will also be testing this concept during the widening of the A2,” says Van den Pol.

With the charm of a family business, short lines, national coverage and a strong innovative character, Visscher Traffic shows how professional traffic measures make the difference on a complex infrastructure project, such as the widening of the A2 motorway.
