Sustainable procurement, it is the desire of many clients such as municipalities and provinces. But as a client, how do you check that sustainability claims by manufacturers are not empty words, but that sustainable products are actually being used? The Assessment Guideline "Environmental Profiles for Concrete Infra Products" offers a solution. This guideline was revised in December 2019.
The more than 60 billion euros of goods and services purchased annually by all governments in the Netherlands must become much more sustainable. All kinds of government organizations have agreed on this in the Manifesto for Socially Responsible Purchasing. For the construction industry, this means that only sustainable materials may be used and that materials released during maintenance and renovation can be reused. Clients, such as municipalities and provinces, are therefore drawing up specifications in which sustainability plays an important role.
The assessment guideline "Environmental profiles for concrete infrastructure products" gives clients the guarantee that they are buying concrete products with transparent and reliable information regarding sustainability. Based on the guideline, a certificate can be issued. You don't get the certificate just like that. The producer of concrete infra products draws up a sustainability declaration regarding his concrete infra products. Kiwa checks at the production site whether the declaration has been drawn up correctly. If a producer meets the requirements of the BRL, he receives the certificate. As a result, municipalities do not have to carry out their own checks on these products and they know for sure that they are getting sustainable infrastructure products.
The assessment guideline 'Environmental profiles for concrete infrastructure products' (BRL K11002 for short) has been prepared by Betonhuis Bestrating and Kiwa. Betonhuis Bestrating is a trade association of manufacturers of concrete paving materials. Kiwa is active worldwide in the field of testing, inspection and certification.
