Why choose Bioblocks?
– From plant waste to sustainable building blocks: 100% sustainable, recyclable, and a natural product
– Stylish, purely Dutch product with a rustic look
– Through processing into BioBlocks, base material is converted from a natural waste product into a sustainably produced raw material.
– BioBlocks contributes to the preservation of rare and distinctive plant and animal species in the Weerribben National Park marshland area.
– No depletion of natural resources
– BioBlocks is a sustainable natural product grown locally.
– Long-term CO2 sequestration
The objective of BioBlocks is to develop an innovative application for surplus reeds and reed mulch and to market the end product, within the constraints of the environment, economy, and ecology. In order to preserve the great diversity of flora and fauna, the silting process must be restarted through continuous efforts to create open water. Reed beds are created by the slow overgrowth of open waters with peat, resulting in reed land. Over time, the reed beds are stripped and/or excavated. The materials released are collected, compressed, and dried naturally. This creates a sustainable building block: BioBlocks.
By using the so-called kraggen and reed matting in the production of sustainable BioBlocks and deploying them in civil engineering, the CO2 that has been stored in the material over the years is locked away for a long time in physical structures, which thus form a more sustainable alternative to, for example, gabions, which, unlike BioBlocks, are often filled with riprap. This also gives nature the space to capture CO2 again in new floating layers. Analysis results have shown that per ton of dry matter of kraggen, a quantity of 1.35 tons of CO2 is captured for the long term.
Sustainability is, also at BioBlocks, an indispensable concept and refers to: long-lasting, resistant to wear and tear or deterioration, and little to no environmental impact. Sustainability also has to do with the way we do business and concerns people, the environment, and society (corporate social responsibility). Sustainability is a very important aspect in the construction world today. Nowadays, all raw materials must be used wisely to ensure a bright future. BioBlocks fit in seamlessly with this! Sustainability stands for MEN (Materials, Energy, and Side Effects). These three points make BioBlocks a sustainable product! Sustainability is not only about ecological aspects. Economic and social aspects also play an important role. All of this determines the future of BioBlocks. BioBlocks is a sustainable and natural building material. The reeds and reed chips used as base materials are harvested from reed beds with respect for flora and fauna.
BioBlocks sees opportunities for using sustainable peat blocks made from reed chaff and brushwood as a finishing material for earth-retaining structures in infrastructure, noise barriers, bank protection, garden and park landscaping, etc. Opportunities in residential and non-residential construction are also being investigated and further developed.
