Volvo Trucks delivers first heavy-duty electric concrete mixer to CEMEX

Volvo Trucks has delivered to CEMEX the first all-electric and zero-emission heavy-duty concrete mixer truck. The battery-electric truck is the latest development of a 2021 agreement between Volvo and CEMEX. A global collaboration on electromobility solutions, to reduce carbon emissions and improve productivity.

The Volvo FMX electric heavy-duty truck, handed over at an event in Berlin last Thursday. The truck can work an entire day, with one recharge during the regular break. It will be used at a concrete plant in Spandau, Berlin, starting this month. The electrification of concrete transport is a challenge because of the heavy loads and continuous mixing. As all-electric heavy transport gradually increases, Volvo Trucks and CEMEX are working to develop and scale up the technologies needed to make zero-emission transport also possible in the demanding construction industry.

"We are very pleased to take this important step in partnership with CEMEX. Both of our companies are committed to ambitious sustainability goals and working together is the way to get there. Together we will work to introduce emission-free transport in the construction industry. Our electric trucks have zero emissions and their quiet operation also ensures a better environment for the people working on construction sites and for local residents," said Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks.

"CEMEX is committed to becoming a carbon-zero company; innovation and collaboration are at the heart of this endeavor," said Fernando A. González, CEO of CEMEX. "Our partnership with Volvo has incredible potential to contribute to the decarbonization of our company. The launch of our first all-electric ready-mix truck is a big step in that direction."

CEMEX and Volvo Group are founding members of the First Movers coalition, a collaboration between the World Economic Forum and US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry, for companies to make procurement commitments that create market demand for low-carbon technologies. Volvo Trucks and CEMEX want to meet their ambitious sustainability goals and contribute to decarbonizing the global economy.

Volvo Trucks has the most complete electric offering in the global trucking industry, with vehicles that can run from 16 to 50 tons total weight, for everything from urban distribution and waste handling to urban construction transport and regional hauling. Volvo Trucks is the market leader for heavy-duty electric trucks ((≥ 16 tons) in Europe and the US. The company aims for half of all new truck sales to be electric by 2030. Volvo Trucks aims to have net zero greenhouse gas emissions in the value chain by 2040 at the latest.

CEMEX is a global building materials company, providing cement, ready-mixed concrete, aggregates and urbanization solutions in markets around the world.
