The wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Almere, owned by the Zuiderzeeland Water Authority, is being completely renovated and made more sustainable in order to keep pace with the city's growth and to process wastewater more efficiently and in a more environmentally friendly manner. The work will take place in 2025 and 2026. Thanks to Vanderkamp's temporary pumping installations and piping, the treatment plant will remain in operation during the renovation.
The current treatment capacity and outdated sludge line are no longer adequate. That is why the Zuiderzeeland Water Authority is thoroughly renovating the Almere wastewater treatment plant. Van Haarst, as the main contractor, is responsible for the total renovation of the installation. The temporary pumping installation and associated piping have been outsourced to Vanderkamp.

Vanderkamp is supplying a complete temporary pump installation with a screen cleaner that collects the incoming wastewater, cleans it, and transfers it to the activated sludge tanks. This ensures that the treatment process continues to run continuously, even during the connection of the new primary settling tank.
Rick van der Kamp explains: “The complexity of this project lies in the distribution, but also in the above-ground tanks surrounding the screen cleaner. We have to fill the screen cleaner and then distribute the contents across various basins. So we're not just pumping here, we're pumping, screening, pumping, and distributing.”
As with many complex water projects, Vanderkamp provides a fully customized service: from design and hydraulic calculations to installation, piping, and 24/7 monitoring. In doing so, they are fully committed to sustainability, including the use of electrically powered pumps.
In short: thanks to the expertise of Vanderkamp, The Dutch Water Engineers, the Almere wastewater treatment plant can be renovated safely and efficiently, with continuous treatment and in line with circular, sustainable ambitions.
