For more than a century, Millenaar en van Schaik Transport has been providing reliable logistics solutions for civil engineering projects. The company is in its element when it comes to complex logistics and construction projects such as the renovation of the A10 South motorway. “Within such a project, we operate as a partner that makes a difference with our expertise and flexibility,” says operational director Marcel Vermeulen.

Collaborating in complex work

Infrastructure projects are rarely standard, Vermeulen rightly points out. “And that certainly applies to the reconstruction of the De Nieuwe Meer junction. It involves building while the ‘shop’ remains open, the roads and intersections remain busy, and cyclists and pedestrians continue to cross. After all, it is an area where metro and train stations converge and where the university campus is located. This requires close consultation, tight coordination, and maximum attention to safety. Much more so than on an average project where you can close off a work area. Our drivers deliver a tremendous performance here every day by working safely in an environment that remains in constant motion. That is only possible if everyone keeps each other on their toes and safety is constantly discussed.”

Logistics hub

The use of equipment by Millenaar and van Schaik Transport varies greatly: from two fixed trucks per day to thirty trucks during an intensive asphalt weekend. “Our strength lies in that flexibility,” says Vermeulen. “For large-scale asphalting operations, we ensure that equipment, materials, and people are available exactly on time. It's no coincidence that we feel at home in the role of logistics hub in complex projects.” And the fleet is geared up for that too. “Our fleet consists of more than 100 trucks, 20 percent of which are now completely zero-emission. By 2026, we want to increase this share to 25 percent. All new vehicles we purchase are electric, with the exception of a few specials that are not yet available in electric versions.”

Own charging plaza

Millenaar en van Schaik Transport therefore has its own loading area on Fokkerweg in Haarlemmermeer. “With a capacity of 1.7 megawatts and space to charge 40 trucks simultaneously, we are among the pioneers in electric heavy transport,” says Vermeulen proudly. “The charging station is also open to the public by appointment, so that partners and fellow transporters can also make use of it.

We have noticed that not every client is yet making the switch to zero emissions mandatory. Nevertheless, we believe that this is the future. That is why we are investing now, so that we will be able to deliver when demand increases. In this way, we combine sustainability with reliability.”

Our profession requires more than just modern trucks, Vermeulen continues. “Drivers must be able to assess logistical situations, work safely, and handle heavy and sometimes dangerous equipment. That is why we invest in training, certifications, and collaboration with other transport companies and training institutes. We also actively train people coming into the profession from other fields, because many drivers will be retiring in the coming years. This ensures that the craftsmanship that has characterized our company for 102 years is preserved. Whether it's large-scale asphalt work, complex urban logistics, or special transport, we ensure that it is carried out safely, sustainably, and professionally.”
