"But unfortunately the reality is different," he observes. Statistics show that too many people still die in the workplace. "Every life is already one too many of course," Engström continues.
Engström hoped 2020 would be the year when strong measures would be taken to reduce accidents on construction sites. But 2020, as everyone knows, became the year when the world was crippled by Covid-19. "Still, this should not stand in the way of improving safety," Engström believes. "Especially since -and thankfully so- work in our industry was mostly able to continue as usual."
Engcon cannot change the industry on its own. "Other manufacturers must also develop safer products. Major players must include higher safety requirements in their tenders. And entrepreneurs must invest in safe production," Engström believes. "And if that is not enough, provisions set by the government contribute to this awareness. A joint effort is required from all parties involved, I am convinced. Together we can do this!" Engcon developed a global security initiative, 'Dig Smart. Dig Safe.', with the goal of achieving absolute zero accidents in the workplace.
In addition to awareness and a collaborative approach, adopting new technologies also plays a role in safety. "The courage to invest in new technology and to set higher standards for each other is, in my opinion, the key to a safer workplace," Engström continued. "In addition, it also leads to increased profitability and efficiency." Engcon develops smart solutions that avoid improper operation and thus prevent accidents. Especially at a time when time pressure, lost focus, inexperienced personnel or constantly switching between different machines are the order of the day, it simply should not be possible to do it wrong. Thus Engcon previously developed QSC, which stands for a standardized locking procedure of attachments controlled by a simple and user-friendly control panel in the cab. Essential here is that the bucket or other implement in the raised position cannot be accidentally released for unlocking. From a safety standpoint, Engcon now offers QSC as standard under the swivel arm and as a retrofit on existing equipment. Optionally, QSC is also available for the machine quick coupler.
"This kind of solution ensures that everyone gets home safely at the end of the workday." Engström concludes, "That should become standard in our industry!"
