A national network of public fast chargers for heavy electric trucks is being opened in Sweden. The charging network is powered by renewable energy. A new service from Volvo Trucks makes it easy for transport companies to find and access the charging stations.
A network for fast charging of electric trucks is an important part of the transition to more sustainable heavy transport. In Sweden, a total of about 130 charging stations are planned for 2023 and 2024. The stations will be operated by different companies, and Volvo Trucks is one of the partners involved.
Volvo Trucks is now introducing a new service that allows carriers to find and use charging stations. The service will first be offered in Sweden*, followed by other markets in Europe and other parts of the world.
"This is a real breakthrough for the electrification of heavy transport. Our customers will have access to public fast chargers throughout Sweden, making electric driving easier than ever," said Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks.
The new service is open to all truck brands and shows all charging stations suitable for heavy-duty vehicles, regardless of who operates them. Users can pay for charging through the new platform, and in the near future it will also be possible to reserve charging time.
"Customers get reliable information on where to find charging stations for heavy electric trucks and they can be sure they are paying a fair market price, with no hidden costs. With the ability to properly plan the route ahead with minimal administration, I believe this is an important step in making electric trucks even more popular with fleet owners," said Roger Alm.
Volvo Trucks is working closely with charging station operators around the world to expand the charging network and service as seamlessly and quickly as possible.
Volvo Trucks, part of Volvo Group, is also building charging infrastructure through Milence, a joint venture with Daimler Truck and the Traton Group. The partnership will result in the installation and operation of at least 1,700 high-performance green charging points on and near highways and logistics hubs across Europe. The infrastructure will provide charging capabilities for all heavy-duty battery-electric vehicles, regardless of brand.
This is how Volvo Trucks' charging service works:
* In the first phase, Volvo's charging service will provide access to 29 charging stations managed by OKQ8. These charging stations will be powered by green electricity.
