The 19.5 km long dike between Tiel and Waardenburg lies along the Netherlands' busiest river, the Waal. In the past, several bends and meanders were cut off by the river itself. As a result, the dike does not lie on the original banks everywhere.
The subsurface of the dike is thus very diverse in nature, sometimes at very short distances, making reinforcing the dike to meet the new legal standards for water safety a complex task. The project is a clear example of Fugro's expertise in water safety and soil-related risks in the design and construction phases.
Fugro's scope covers a wide range of work such as consulting and design work, additional specialized soil and laboratory testing, digitization work including the construction and management of an integrated Building Information Model (BIM), and environmental monitoring and quality control of earthwork during execution.
"We are very proud of this contract," said Joost Delissen, managing director of Fugro Netherlands. "As a Geo-data specialist, we can bring in a lot of our services. The contract confirms our good reputation in the hydraulic engineering market in the Netherlands. In addition, we are playing a very prominent role in the construction team around the digitization of all geo-data - a role that is becoming increasingly important in this type of large dyke reinforcement project. Together with the contractor combination Mekante Diek, we contribute to making the Netherlands safer, the importance of which became clear once again in recent weeks."
