Leading in innovation
The portion of the project on the west side of the highway has now been given a fresh coat of asphalt.

Leading the way in innovation

Some 70% of all the asphalt and CTB paving at Schiphol Airport were delivered by the transport company. By the way, the deliveries are done in the most sustainable way possible, as Millenaar and van Schaik Transport is definitely leading the way in innovation.

"We have a very long history with runway paving at Schiphol Airport," begins Ad Hoefkens, co-owner of Millenaar and van Schaik Transport. "In that capacity, we are also involved in this project. Thanks in part to our years of experience on airside, we are very easy to deploy. Our cars are equipped with transponders and our drivers have the necessary safety passes and diplomas. This allows us to drive freely within the restrictions on airside. In addition, we have a good relationship with both Heijmans and Schiphol based on trust, transparency and expertise."

9,300 vehicle movements

For the VDR project and partly in parallel with it the replacement of the asphalt on the Polderbaan, Millenaar en van Schaik is transporting an enormous amount of milling asphalt, CTB pavement and new asphalt. In figures, this involves the removal of no less than 38,065 tons of milling asphalt and 91,000 tons of old CTB pavement. And then to the supply of 110,307 tons of new CTB and 40,000 tons of new asphalt. That amounts to a total of 279,372 tons. "If you consider that each car carries a maximum of 30 tons, it quickly goes toward 9,300 vehicle movements," Hoefkens says. "The old asphalt was milled selectively (layer by layer) so that it could be reused in the asphalt plants for the production of new asphalt in a high-quality manner. In turn, the lower-quality old asphalt was incorporated into the new CTB cementitious pavements."

Winter sports

Despite starting in the middle of the harsh winter period in February this year, we got through the first two phases virtually undisturbed and were able to deliver on time nicely, Hoefkens looks back. "The part of the project on the west side of the highway has now been given a fresh layer of asphalt, and we are currently working on the east side where some 40,000 tons of over-height is being removed. Again, new CTB and asphalt will then be driven in."

Hydrogen

With 105 tractor units and some 40 semi low-loaders, Millenaar and van Schaik Transport is among the largest tipper transporters in our country. "We work as asphalt transporters for the major road construction companies in our country and have above-average understanding of road construction," Hoefkens says. "That is also our added value. We know what needs to be done and can think along in the planning and phasing in terms of deploying the right vehicles. In addition, we are a leader in sustainability and innovation. We have already been running on HVO 20% fuel since 2019, and we recently placed an order for ten hydrogen-powered tractors. Even though such sustainability in road construction is not yet on the horizon, we are already taking our responsibility. Because we also want to be able to make a difference for our customers in the next hundred years. After all, we will be celebrating our 100th anniversary in two years."
