Earlier this year, Lantis and the Department of Mobility and Public Works already announced that they chose the Rinkoniên contractor consortium to carry out the works. For the past few months, negotiations have been going on behind the scenes for the cooperation contract between the various parties. Today, that document received the signatures of all those involved. The works on the Oosterweelknoop and the Royers Lock will start during the summer.
The future on- and off-ramp complex, called the Oosterweelknoopp, will give the southern part of the port and Eilandje a direct connection to the Antwerp Ring Road. The complex forms the link between the Scheldt Tunnel and the Channel Tunnels. In 2030, you will drive from here to Linkeroever via the Scheldt Tunnel or to the northern part of the Ring Road via the Channel Tunnels. The new connection will significantly reduce freight and stealth traffic towards Groenendaallaan and Schijnpoort. Contractor consortium Rinkoniên, consisting of Artes-Roegiers, Cit Blaton, Boskalis, Mobilis and Stadsbader, is in charge of building the interchange.
Remco Hoeboer, Mobilis director: as a Dutch contractor, we are already working on the left bank of the Oosterweel link (Lot1) and are therefore proud that we may also carry out the Oosterweel junction and the renovation of the Royers Lock.
Rinkoniên is also taking on the renovation of the Royers Lock. The lock connects the Scheldt with the docks and with the Albert Canal further down the river. After more than 100 years of faithful service, the lock is in need of renovation and will be converted into a high-performance inland navigation lock.
The renovation is an important step in the modal shift to more sustainable modes of transport within goods transportation. The Royers lock will be considerably longer (from 180 to 230 meters in length) and wider (from 22 to 36 meters). "This will make it possible to easily lock more and larger barges and thus increase transport on the Albert Canal. This way we get more trucks off the road and improve the flow on the road," emphasizes Minister Peeters.
