Soil testing and remediation

Over the past 30 to 40 years, most of the soil contamination in the Netherlands has been mapped and also remediated, but partly because of the method of remediation that became common from the mid-1990s onward, there is still a lot of contaminated soil present that can hinder construction projects.  

In the early 1990s, it became clear that society's ambition to remove all soil contamination was both technically and financially unfeasible. But we also learned that in many cases eliminating the risks to people and the environment was sufficient, such as covering a contamination with soil or pavement or gradual degradation by bacteria. In some cases, remediation did not even prove necessary because the use of the site, think of an industrial site, did not result in risks.  

The disadvantage is that decades later a construction project may require work in the contaminated soil, or the use of a site may change from industrial to residential. Because such use does involve risks, the soil must still be decontaminated.

Water management

Another important part of today's (construction) projects is the responsible handling of rainwater. To determine the possibilities for so-called climate-adaptive measures, a desk study and field research must be carried out, just as with environmental research, to determine the permeability of the soil and the storage capacity. This can of course easily be combined with research into the environmental quality of the soil. Herein Prommenz offers tailored advice on sustainable climate measures.
