From industrial past to future-proof foundation

Funderingstechnieken Verstraeten B.V. (Fundex), with offices in Oostburg and Zeebrugge, has been an established name in foundations and deep foundations for over 70 years. As the inventor of the Fundexpaal® and Tubexpaal®, the company grew into the specialist in vibration-free (deep) foundations for water, road and high-rise buildings. That expertise is clearly reflected today in the redevelopment of the monumental Machinefabriek in Flushing. This former industrial heart of the Schelde site is getting a new future with space for parking, sports, culture and events. In a transformation of this scale, a safe and sustainable foundation is literally the basis. Fundex plays a key role in this with innovative, vibration-free and emission-free foundation techniques.

Foundation within existing mure

The imposing factory halls - up to 95 meters deep and 16 meters high - are being repurposed in phases. The complex will be divided into several zones, each with its own function. In the central part there will be a parking garage with space for more than 600 cars. The left hall will have a social function including sports facilities, workshops, a library and meeting spaces. The right hall will be equipped as an event location. Each new function makes specific demands on the bearing capacity and stability of the underground.

Working within a listed building, however, presents additional challenges. Large drilling racks are not deployable due to the limited height and load-bearing capacity of the floor. Fundex therefore has specialized machinery for work in tight or sensitive environments.

The CD20E, a compact all-electric drilling rig, is being used on this construction site. This machine operates quietly, produces no direct emissions and is ideal for inner-city or monumental sites where disturbance must be kept to a minimum. This allows for safe and efficient work without damage to the existing structure.

With this electrical installation Fundex realizes a total of 160 foundation piles to a depth of 25.5 meters. There are vibration-free techniques used, including combi piles with grout injection. This method guarantees a stable foundation without peak loads and minimizes the risk of settlement or cracking in the historic building.
