Mining company Boliden buys 74-ton electric Scania truck for heavy haulage

A 74-ton GTW heavy-duty electric truck will be delivered to mining company Boliden in spring 2022. The electric truck is part of the company's efforts to reduce its CO2-emissions by 40 percent by 2030.

Electric vehicles are becoming an everyday sight on the roads in northern Sweden. The electric truck, with a total weight of 74 tons including load and trailer, will be driven by transport company Renfors Åkeri AB on a 30-km round trip on public roads near the mine in northern Sweden.

"Once again we are showing that it is technically possible with fully electrified solutions for heavy vehicles. Development is rapid! It is vital that the infrastructure keeps up to date to enable more customers to take this step. It is also very valuable to work on these kinds of concepts for heavy electrified operations with players like Boliden, which wants to drive development, not least environmentally," says Fredrik Allard, Head of E-mobility at Scania.

"Piloting an early electrified solution for very heavy vehicles and contributing to the development and transition to sustainable solutions fit very well into our agenda. The Scania electric truck will reduce emissions in one of the most important streams in our operations and further strengthen our ambitious climate performance," says Jonas Ranggård, program manager at Boliden.

This electric truck is part of a close and innovative pre-development process between Scania and Boliden. The cooperation offers the possibility of electrifying more of Boliden's transport streams in the future.

The truck's technical solutions are based on current mass-produced technology, but with the addition of stronger components, something that allows the electric vehicle to do its job even during heavy operations. This powerful load capacity and even greater range are part of Scania's mass-produced solutions within 24 months. Delivery of this truck is scheduled for the second quarter of 2022.

The project is part of REEL, Regional Electrified Logistics, an initiative led by CLOSER and supported by the Fordonsstrategisk forskning och Innovation (FFI) program to pave the way for the transition to electrified freight transport in the Swedish market.
