Hollandia designs, realizes and maintains complex steel construction (water) works and movement works, such as bridges, locks, dams, (storm surge) barriers and specials. Activities in which the company is increasingly pushing the boundaries of what steel construction has made possible so far. "We are building more specialized and innovative than ever before," says Diederik van Rijn, director Hollandia Infra "In addition to craftsmanship and knowledge, this also requires good partners to work with. By joining forces and sharing knowledge, we relieve our clients and complete the entire process: from design to turnkey delivery."
Subsidiaries operating under the Hollandia flag include Hollandia Infra and Hollandia Services. While the former focuses on the new construction of steel structural (water) works, Hollandia Services focuses on both regular and major maintenance and renovation. Both companies have accumulated extensive experience and an impressive track record over the years.
Thanks to the combination of skilled employees and a strong market position, where cooperation, safety and sustainability are paramount, Hollandia is ready for the future. "In terms of technological innovations, cooperation and sustainability, we want to be the leading party in 2025," Ronald van den Berg, director of Hollandia Services, confirms the ambitions.
Its strategic location on open water near the ports of Rotterdam makes Hollandia's high-quality production site extremely suitable for a wide range of customers within the construction, offshore, petrochemical, industrial and shipbuilding industries. It is an environment in which Hollandia Infra and Hollandia Services achieve great performance. Taking a closer look at the two subsidiaries, Hollandia Infra's craftsmanship appears to rest on extensive knowledge and expertise. "Steel structures and movement works are becoming increasingly imposing, the conditions more challenging," Diederik continues. "That forces us to be creative and innovative: in terms of design, engineering, project management, fabrication, conservation, transport and assembly. We have all these disciplines in-house."
Hollandia Services is tasked with keeping the "wet infrastructure" within the Netherlands in reliable condition. By means of regular inspections, maintenance, overhaul and renovation, the professionals guarantee the optimal technical condition of many civil engineering works. To this end, Hollandia Services has its own engineering, E&I and maintenance department and a 24-hour emergency service.
Hollandia's strength lies not only in the fact that it offers all services under one roof, but also in the close cooperation between the two subsidiaries. "The interface between mechanical engineering and E&I is becoming heavier and larger," Ronald explains. "By mastering these disciplines in-house and optimally aligning the interfaces, we offer customers a total solution. This has a positive effect on lead time, budget and the end result. The open and transparent nature and the creation of optimal synergy, both internally and within the cooperation with external parties, is essential in this regard."
Good examples of the cooperation between Hollandia Infra and Hollandia Services are the renovation work on the Haringvliet Bridge and the Euvelgunner Bridge. In the former Rijkswaterstaat project, Hollandia Infra was commissioned by combination Mobilis and Croonwolter&dros to replace the bridge valve. The associated movement work was realized by Machinefabriek Rusthoven. Within a record time of nine months, the 2,000-ton bridge valve was built as much as possible plug & play in the factory. Perfectly in time for the start of the eight-week traffic shutdown. One of the biggest challenges during this period was adjusting the motion gear. The bridge valve moves by means of pinions on the back of the ballast box over a large radial gear train in the bridge basement. Adjusting this gearing is a precision job that requires great knowledge and skill. A specialist team from Hollandia Infra and Services together ensured that this process went smoothly. Meanwhile, another team from Hollandia Services was performing major maintenance on the 1-kilometer-long fixed bridge.
On the Hoge Euvelgunner bridge in Groningen, the synergy of both BVs was also well expressed. Hollandia Infra was commissioned by Combinatie Herepoort to replace the two bridge traps including the movement work. On-site assembly was handled by colleagues from the Hollandia Services branch in Sint Nicolaasga, Friesland.
It is not only large works that Hollandia realizes, the company also has numerous smaller bridges, locks and barriers in its portfolio. Like the Ouderkerk Bridge, which Hollandia Infra renewed in a construction team together with VHB, KWS Infra, Vialis and Movares. In the fall of 2023, Hollandia Services, together with the Province of South Holland, started project Vaarweg 1: the major maintenance of nine bridges over the Delftse Schie in and near Delft. Most of the work here consists of replacing all E-installations, but mechanical, civil and conservation work will also take place. Once the major maintenance has been completed, a two-year maintenance period will follow for each bridge.
Hollandia Infra and Services are thus building together to improve the 'wet' infrastructure within the Netherlands and abroad. Hollandia also consciously chooses to employ its people in a sustainable way. "We find it extremely important that our people enjoy their work, make cool things, but are also given room for development within the organization," says Diederik. "Good professionals are scarce. That is why we have had our own Learning School for decades: on the one hand, a breeding ground for new talent, and on the other, it offers very experienced employees the space to do less physical work by sharing their vast knowledge and experience here and using help from the younger colleagues," adds Ronald. With a combination of skilled employees and a strong market position, where cooperation, safety and sustainability are paramount, Hollandia is ready for the future.
